 From the Editor:

by Tim DiChiara, Senior Site Editor

Several weeks ago in this space, I highlighted Gartner's latest DBMS market survey and noted the surprising growth of Linux as an enterprise data management platform. In 2002, IBM led the Linux market -- a good thing, since they were almost betting the company on it. However, these latest data showed that Oracle has surged ahead, grabbing $207 million in sales and accounting for 69% of the overall Linux DBMS market. Oracle is especially seeing huge increases in Linux sales in data warehouse environments. Ouch. The enterprise-scale Linux market is small and the war is not over yet, but Oracle seems to have won the first battle.

Several of you wrote in, indicating your perhipheral interest in open source software such as Linux and MySQL, but vowing never to leave more "industrial-strength" operating systems such as Solaris or DBMSs such as Oracle. However, here are a few articles we recently posted that discuss why some of your peers beg to differ:

Let us hear where you use open source software and where you'd never use it -- post your comments via our "Sound Off" feature on the pages above. I look forward to reading your thoughts!

Cheers, Tim
