Several weeks ago in this space, I asked how important local user groups are to you. I wondered why you joined: Networking for jobs? Networking for clients? To commiserate with somebody who actually knows what an 'outer join' is? To practice speaking in preparation for a national show? To figure out technical problems without hiring an expensive consultant? To show the boss that you're a 'go-getter'? Addicted to pizza?

Several of you wrote in with your feedback, essentially saying "all of the above and more":

  • Brian D. writes that he lives in a small technology market where resources for training, conferences, and networking are below many people's expectation. User groups are thus
  • Kurt L. notes that user groups also "help people prep for the SQL Server MCDBA certification. This way one does not have to pay and arm and a leg to a for-profit training center NOR sit thru useless, unhelpful classes at a university or community college."
  • Alan B. writes: "What have local groups done for me? If it was to show something to my manager, that would be a waste of time. When I research something for a member, I learn more about it myself. When I prepare a presentation, I get more out of it than the audience. Their questions spur me to find out even more. Just being around people that know something different about the technologies rubs off on me."

Thanks to all those who wrote in. If you want to promote your local SQL Server, DB2, MySQL, Sybase or Oracle user group, or contribute some particularly noteworthy presentation or technical article from a user group meeting, email me and I'm sure we can work something out.

Till next time, Tim

ASK THE EXPERTS: ISO/ANSI SQL and the GROUP BY clause
I'm trying to figure out what is ISO/ANSI SQL:1999 approved usage for the "group by" statement in terms of the SQL:1999 E051-04 feature, which states that in reference to the "group by clause" that the "GROUP BY can contain columns not in [select list]"...
