LEAD STORY:
"Domino offers refuge from storm"
So far Domino has offered a refuge from the virus attacks that
threaten to capsize companies relying on Lotus competitors. But that
could be about to change. There are increasing vulnerabilities
administrators and users should be aware of, such as Domino's
newfound compatibility with the Microsoft Outlook client through
iNotes Access for Outlook. It could invite sharks to tear into the
platform. And there are other developments to worry about.

[1] "An end to global viruses -- for good?"
The British Ministry of Defense has come up with a way of stopping
quick-spreading e-mail viruses. The software does not rely on
traditional virus-detection methods but detects a virus attempting to
send e-mails to all the names in an address book. The software
requires users to authorize any such action, theoretically stopping
global virus attacks before they start.

[2] "Server, heal thyself"
IBM has kicked off a multibillion-dollar effort called eLiza to build
computer systems that can fix themselves while problems are in the
early stages. Hundreds will work on eLiza, spreading changes to all
IBM's server lines, its storage products and software packages such
as WebSphere and Tivoli. IBM's goal is to reduce the difficulties of
administering the large servers at the heart of Web operations and
corporate networks.

[3] "Groupware grows up"
Microsoft Exchange 2000, the latest version of the e-mail and
collaboration platform introduced in 1996, boasts more new features
than any of its predecessors, says this product review. "Good news
for Microsoft, but also good news for your company if you can
effectively exploit Exchange 2000's enhanced features," the reviewer
says.

[4] "Cell phone makers team on IM"
Cell phone giants Nokia, Motorola and Ericsson are developing a
single instant-messaging standard for wireless devices, called
Wireless Village. The software standard would allow cell phones,
handheld computers and other devices to communicate over wireless
networks, regardless of their manufacturer or operating system
software.

[5] "Peer computing: Friend or foe?"
Many in the technology industry think peer-to-peer will have a huge
impact on the efficiency of large businesses. But will the wide
adoption of P2P in the business world threaten the livelihoods of
application services providers? Lotus Notes creator Ray Ozzie, who
founded P2P company Groove Networks, says he does not think so.

"Ogle not Google's top scientist"
What's it like to be a woman working in the Silicon Valley? Very
frustrating at times for Monika Henzinger, the director of research
at the Internet search engine Google. She is asked this question more
often than she would like, especially this week when her name
appeared on San Francisco Women on the Web's list of the top 25 women
on the Web. Her answer: "It feels normal." Maybe the current Miss
France should have a talk with Henzinger. People seem to be asking a
similar question about her.
