"Standardizing postmerger e-mail a headache for IT" Following a merger, businesses are often eager to combine disparate e-mail systems into a single unit. That often means deciding between Microsoft's Exchange or Lotus' Domino. Marathon Ashland Petroleum chose Exchange because it allowed the company to have centralized migration and management while having a decentralized implementation. However, some analysts feel that in an era of increasing standards and enhanced connectivity tools, there really is no truly compelling reason to consolidate e-mail. "IBM launches automated management initiative" IBM is hard at work on an initiative to build automated systems management tools into all of its servers. The project, dubbed eLiza, would arm everything from low-end PC servers to mainframes with the ability to activate redundant components when failures occur and automate functions like operating system installation. This year's nominations give a nod to music, spiritualism and the downright odd. But they are neither particularly worldly nor especially wide. The 350-member International Academy of Digital Arts & Sciences has put an overwhelming focus on English-language, U.S.-centered sites. Still, the gala July awards ceremony is expected to draw more than 3,000 technology industry figures wearing some of the same outrageous fashions as their film industry counterparts. The best news is award winners must work within a five-words-or-less acceptance speech limit.
