LEAD STORY:
"Who's reading your instant messages?"
Instant messaging may be a handy and quick communications tool, but
experts it is a security risk, vulnerable to eavesdropping and even
physical tracking. Also brewing are issues such as how and when
governmental entities, such as law enforcement agencies and the
courts, can obtain IM transcripts, usage information, or other data.
But three leading instant messaging services all dispute claims that
their systems lack security. There are products available that offer
protection, however.

[3] "IBM retools for Web services"
IBM is launching new development tools and application-server
software for building Web-based software and services. The big
change, said one analyst, is that every version of IBM's WebSphere
application server is now built on the same software code.
Previously, each version of WebSphere, from low end to high end, was
built using slightly different code, making it harder for businesses
to move to higher-end versions of the server as their needs grew.

IBM has sold a Linux supercomputer to WesternGeco for oil exploration
after similar sales to Chevron and Royal Dutch/Shell Group. The
supercomputer is made up of 256 server computers, each containing two

soundings to digital maps so WesternGeco clients can distinguish oil
fields from other underground formations. The supercomputers cost
less than $1 million.

THE MISSING LINK
A look at an off-the-wall story off the Web
-------------------------------------------------
"'Quake' for kitties"
When the overindulged (and under-stimulated) feline in your life has
grown bored with catnip, you might want to turn on your computer. A
software developer has created a game that he says provides an
all-day incentive for housebound kitties to get off the sofa. The
software includes 11 virtual kitty treats, including helpless little
birds, dangling spiders and a furry mouse, that dart around the
computer screen. The victims either move on their own as part of the
program's screensaver mode or are manipulated by the cat's owner.
This $20 game is "a totally immersing experience" says the creator --
at least by feline standards.
