While the high-tech downturn is mostly to blame, thinning crowds at trade shows are also due to increased educational opportunities elsewhere, conference experts say. They have a high cash burn rate, which scares aware investors, says a Giga Information Group analyst. But SmartForce, an e-learning company and Lotus Business Partner, is defying the ASP trend. Winnebago, manufacturer of recreational vehicles, has adopted the open-standards-based Bynari Insight Server solution, which allows it to run its e-mail workload on Linux partitions alongside its mainframe's standard productivity workload. The company chose Linux because it was cheaper. Lotus Development has had Sametime on the market since before most knew what IM was. These systems turn the foundation of instant messaging from a consumer toy into a comprehensive business tool that can be used in numerous applications. The same kind of technology that powers instant messaging will be coming to a cell phone near you. Aptly named Presence technology will be able to tell you who has their phone on, who's on a call, and who doesn't really want to be called -- maybe he's at a movie, or she's in the middle of a mud mask. Eventually Presence will be able to tell you where your buddies are, so maybe you can hook up with so-and-so if you see that you're both at the same boring conference and want to steal away for a while. Motorola is working on Presence. Look for it to start popping up in cell phones later this year.
