LEAD STORY:
"Papows drives IT Factory's American growth strategy"
Former Lotus CEO Jeff Papows, recently named chairman of the board of
IT Factory, has made a big impact on IT Factory's business strategy.
He has helped a Copenhagen company transform itself into an American
entity that has grown through the purchase of eight other companies
in the last 18 months. Formerly devoted to Lotus users, IT Factory is
now going after Microsoft users as well.

[1] "Trade show attendance down, poll shows"
Thirty-four percent of TechTarget readers have cut back on their
travel plans, a poll showed, as attendance plummets at trade shows
and conferences this year. While the high-tech downturn is mostly to
blame, thinning crowds at trade shows are also due to increased
educational opportunities elsewhere, conference experts say.

[2] "ASPs struggle despite stock market upsurge"
Application service providers continue to find it tough going. They
have a high cash burn rate, which scares aware investors, says a Giga
Information Group analyst. But SmartForce, an e-learning company and
Lotus Business Partner, is defying the ASP trend.

[3] "Winnebago taps Linux for long haul"
Winnebago Industries is using a new e-mail system based on an IBM
eServer running Linux. Winnebago, manufacturer of recreational
vehicles, has adopted the open-standards-based Bynari Insight Server
solution, which allows it to run its e-mail workload on Linux
partitions alongside its mainframe's standard productivity workload.
The company chose Linux because it was cheaper.

[4] "Instant messaging hits the office"
With its move to make instant messenger an integral part of the
Windows operating system, Microsoft is actually catching on to a wave
of third-party developers that have already gotten the idea. Lotus
Development has had Sametime on the market since before most knew
what IM was. These systems turn the foundation of instant messaging
from a consumer toy into a comprehensive business tool that can be
used in numerous applications.

[5] "Jim's picks for e-commerce"
Few vendors are delivering inspiring e-commerce and e-business tools
that will help businesses succeed through innovation. But there are a
few standouts, says this reviewer, including IBM's WebSphere Commerce
Suite, Hewlett Packard's e-Speak A.3.1.1 and NetactionWeb services
platform.

THE MISSING LINK
A look at an off-the-wall story off the Web
-------------------------------------------------
"Next-generation "buddy lists" could transform phone habits"
It's not your father's buddy list. The same kind of technology that
powers instant messaging will be coming to a cell phone near you.
Aptly named Presence technology will be able to tell you who has
their phone on, who's on a call, and who doesn't really want to be
called -- maybe he's at a movie, or she's in the middle of a mud
mask. Eventually Presence will be able to tell you where your buddies
are, so maybe you can hook up with so-and-so if you see that you're
both at the same boring conference and want to steal away for a
while. Motorola is working on Presence. Look for it to start popping
up in cell phones later this year.
