Old conversations can be archived and retrieved, news to many IM users. There is no way of knowing whether exchanges are being recorded. That's because services such as Yahoo Messenger and AOL Time Warner's ICQ have begun offering message archive features that essentially allow one person to record a conversation without the other's consent. Privacy advocates are not pleased. He said he is puzzled that peer-to-peer technology continues to receive so much attention when most organizations are investigating alternative, decentralized technologies for communication and collaboration. He said the security technology already exists to enable p-to-p communication securely across the firewall. The technology allows for video, audio, graphics, special effects and user interaction. Storymail's product tires to combat the difficulty of actually getting rich media messages to consumer inboxes. Something to keep in mind while on vacation this summer: Acme Rent-a-Car is being sued by a Connecticut man after it used Global Positioning System technology to track him and then fined him $450 for speeding three times. The New Haven Small Claims Court case pits New Haven resident James Turner against Acme, a local company. When Turner contested the charges, Acme was able to point out on a map exactly where he exceeded the company's threshold speed of 79 mph. Acme said it is not trying to make money with the fine, just protect its assets. The judge has delayed the claim until the Department of Consumer Protection has issued a ruling.
