LEAD STORY:
"IBM + IM + wireless: Oh my"
The difference between AOL's and Lotus' wireless instant messaging is
that the Lotus offering is targeted at business users. There are
still some lingering questions, such as how easy it will be to use?
Numeric keypads are not conducive to quick and easy text chats.
Second, how excited will people be to pay for a service they enjoy
for free on their desktop PCs?

[1] "Users seek Web services clarity"
Concerns about hazy pricing and interoperability and security
problems have made customers cautious of Web services. Meanwhile,
Lotus, Microsoft, Sun and Oracle are pushing major Web services
initiatives. Analysts say that momentum is building but that users
have time to sort through the hype and discover how Web services can
benefit them.

[2] "Antidote to spam"
Spam and e-mail viruses tie up employees' time and take a bite out of
information technology budgets by hogging bandwidth on LAN and
Internet connections. E-mail filters, well designed and strategically
placed, can provide relief. This is a round up of what technology and
products are available to provide relief.

[3] "Workspace portal eases data access"
ActiveIntranet, a developer of portal components, has launched its
latest workspace portal product. Designed to allow staff to search,
share, publish and enhance business information, it uses technology
from Autonomy, Lotus and Verity. It includes a content management and
collaboration tool, a workflow product and data and application
integration.

[4] "Microsoft strategy shift casts fog over Exchange"
Microsoft is reducing the role it assigned Exchange 2000 and its Web
Storage System, as a key development environment. The about-face
means those building applications on top of the WSS, a universal
repository for data, will have to design those applications so they
can run against the new data store Microsoft is developing for its
.Net platform. With only about 13% of Exchange users having migrated
to Exchange 2000, a major portion of current Exchange shops will have
to consider the implications of a new data store as they deploy
Exchange 2000 and develop applications.

[5] "Ballmer pushes .Net, XML for Web services"
Software will no longer be packaged and sold to customers on a CD,
and applications will no longer be static programs that sit on a
desktop or run off a server, said Microsoft chief Steve Ballmer.
Instead, he said, software will be delivered over the Internet as
services that allow customers to interact with them dynamically.

THE MISSING LINK
A look at an off-the-wall story off the Web
-------------------------------------------------
"Barney blarney makes dino outfit purple with rage"

The moral of this story: Don't mess with Barney the dinosaur. The Web
site Cybercheese takes a poke at the purple dino with a list of "150
ways to kill the Purple Dinosaur." The Lyons Group, which owns the
rights to all things Barney, raised a huff and responded by firing
off a nasty cease-and-desist letter threatening a lawsuit if the list
is not removed by tomorrow. Cybercheese countered with its own
vulgar, unflattering letter that, in essence, told the Lyons Group
that the site's parody was not infringing on Barney's trademark. It's
enough to make Barney and his band of merry pre-schoolers skip recess
and stand in the corner in protest.
