LEAD STORY:
"Web-based mail clients still don't measure up"
Although thin clients such as Lotus iNotes Web Access are finding
their niche, the promise of a browser-based front end that can match
the worthiness of a native client for corporate messaging and
collaboration is no closer to reality. Lotus, Microsoft and Novell
offer browser access to their messaging and collaboration servers,
but it is largely limited to e-mail and calendar features.

[1] "Rumors of GroupWises demise are greatly exaggerated"
An artfully spoofed e-mail is bouncing around the Internet with the
message that Novell's GroupWise messaging software -- third in a
market dominated by Lotus Notes and Microsoft Exchange - will be
discontinued. The company's chief executive officer said although the
company is reshuffling its other product lines, GroupWise is not on
the list.

[2] "A portal odyssey"
The portal field is crowded. Major players, including Computer
Associates International, IBM, iPlanet, Lotus, Microsoft, Oracle and
Sybase, have recently released portals. A host of other vendors,
including Brio Technology, BroadVision, Corechange, Plumtree
Software, Tibco Software and Viador, offers portal products. There
are big differences in the capabilities of different portal servers.
Here is a look at some of the trends in the technology.

[3] "Sun, AOL prep corporate instant messaging"
Sun Microsystems and AOL Time Warner are working on advanced instant
messaging software for corporate customers. The software is called
Project Real-time Asynchronous Communications or iPlanet Instant
Messenger beta 3.0. IBM and Microsoft already have instant messaging
software.

[4] "Instant messaging scales corporate ladder"
According to analysts and industry observers, the new,
business-strength instant messaging has been bolstered by the
addition of features lacking in consumer-oriented IM services. New
features include security, scalability and the capability of bringing
groups together to work within applications. A number of nimble IM
vendors are squaring off with large corporate collaboration players
such as Lotus Development and Microsoft in a fight to win the
business market.

[5] "Study: XML in widespread use"
About a quarter of companies are using XML in a major project, found
a survey by the Cutter Consortium consulting firm. Some 26% of
companies surveyed said they are using XML in a major project, 24%
say they have used it in a test project, 33% are studying XML and 17%
are committed to extensive use of XML.

Lotus Development's new iNotes Web Access client promises to let
users work offline without the bulky proprietary full Notes client.
It is code-named Shimmer and now is in test mode. Lotus says the
lightweight client will do much of what the fully loaded, Notes
client used to do. Lotus is positioning the client as a companion
rather than a replacement for the full client, just as Microsoft is
with its own Outlook and Outlook Express.

THE MISSING LINK
A look at an off-the-wall story off the Web
-------------------------------------------------
"People make the best robots"
Did you ever have a crush on the robots from Star Wars? Maybe not.
But, the next time you hear a pick-up line in a bar it might be from
C-3PO. Engineers at UC-Berkley are teaching robots to flirt, make
small talk and drink wine. During the fifth annual Webby Awards being
held this week, 1,000 online puppeteers will take control of
Tele-Actor, a human that obeys commands like a robot. Tele-Actor
won't make a move without permission, asking questions like "What
should I drink?" or "Who should I kiss?" and her every move will be
transmitted back to the audience as a series of still images recorded
by a small camera attached to her head. Researchers are hoping that
studying the results of the experiment will lead to technological
advancements in robotics.
