LEAD STORY:
"Security vulnerabilities found in LDAP products"
A Finnish university project to test the security of communications
protocols has revealed serious vulnerabilities in several
implementations of the Lightweight Directory Access Protocol
affecting products such as Lotus Domino and Microsoft Exchange
servers. The vulnerabilities could result in denial-of-service
attacks and unauthorized privileged access. Information on patch
availability is available.

[1] "IBM sees weakness ahead"
IBM reported slightly higher second-quarter net income but cautioned
it would be hurt in the second half by a slowdown in its chip making
business, investment write downs and the strong dollar. Slow spots in
the second quarter included personal computers, hard disk drives and
microelectronics, and those would continue to hurt IBM in the months
ahead, the company said. Services, mainframe computer sales and sales
of data storage products were cited by IBM as doing well.

[2] "Big Blue releases new developer toys"
IBM has added several new features, including an XML registry tool
and a computing utilities section, to its alphaWorks site, an
emerging technology resource center of its developerWorks portal. The
XML Registry/Repository data management system tool uses IBM's DB2
Universal Database to store and search XML documents by content in
order to help developers more efficiently manage XML-based
applications.

Lotus and IBM are making some changes to their Passport Advantage and
PartnerWorld for Software programs. Changes to the Passport Advantage

THE MISSING LINK
A look at an off-the-wall story off the Web
-------------------------------------------------
"The driving nightmare - the car that talks back"
It's hard enough battling the kids for control of the car radio, but
now, thanks to IBM, you have to contend with the car itself. Big Blue
has developed an "Artificial Passenger" to keep travel weary drivers
awake at the wheel. The system changes radio stations to see if the
driver notices, cracks jokes, and includes a conversation planner
program that asks questions and measures response times to determine
if you're dozing in the driver's seat. If the computer receives a
sluggish response it squirts a chilling shot of ice water in your
face. Suggestions for an optional Three Stooges package that sprays
seltzer instead of water and then calls you a "knucklehead," have
been dismissed.
