LEAD STORY:
"Lotus to lay off 200 more"
Lotus is blaming tough economic times for another round of layoffs.
The company handed out pink slips to 200 of its 5,500 total
employees. The job losses mainly hit the company's services and
consulting business. In addition, Lotus is making some management
changes that have impact all the way up the executive chain. CEO Al
Zollar gets a new title and will now be called general manager, the
same title held by the executives who run IBM's other key software
units.

38%: No. I wish the best for Ray Ozzie and his Groove peer-to-peer
product, but Lotus offers all the collaboration my company needs
     right now.
29%: Yes. My company is highly interested in the technology.
23%: No. It's going nowhere. Security is a problem.
11%: Yes. My company is already using peer-to-peer software.

[1] "Novell to boost 'Net mail system"
Novell is upping the ante in its groupware fight with Lotus and
Microsoft. Novell Internet Messaging System (NIMS) 3.0 adds new
calendaring capabilities, as well as the ability to let end users
create notes and schedule tasks and meetings.

[2] "Sircam worm built to last"
You may have thought that last week's Sircam worm was a distant
memory, but it could be poised to make a comeback. European workers
who are returning from vacation this week could unleash the e-mail
virus for a second round of trouble. Sircam randomly sends a chosen
file from the infected computer's hard drive, potentially sending
confidential business data or embarrassing personal information along
with itself.

[3] "Officials fight Code Red worm"
The U.S. Government is working with private officials to adopt a
"take no prisoner" approach to protecting the world from the "Code
Red" worm. The government routinely works with private companies to
issue warnings about new hack attacks and viruses, but never before
have they made such a high-profile stand.

[4] "Role-based access control on a roll"
Roll-based provisioning of applications and network rights, a system
of giving users privileges based on their job titles, is gaining in
popularity. One tool for enabling roll-based provisioning is Business
Layers' Day One software, which takes input directly from human
resources applications to activate accounts on Domino, Microsoft
Exchange and other servers.

[5] "Database dreams"
The next major release of Microsoft Exchange could be based upon
Yukon, Microsoft's new SQL Server due in 2003. In addition to
handling the structured row-and-column data that is the lifeblood of
relational databases, Yukon will also work with more free-form
unstructured data found in forms and documents.

THE MISSING LINK
A look at an off-the-wall story off the Web
-------------------------------------------------
"Cheeky monkey apes his keepers"
Criminals who steal cell phones just don't get it. Sure, they might
be able to make a call or two, but the authorities usually catch up
with them. Take Chippy the chimp at Britain's Blair Drummond Safari
Park, for example. After picking his keeper's pocket of a new mobile
phone, Chippy thought he'd make a couple of speed-dial prank calls.
Zoo officials couldn't figure who was calling them until one of them
yelled into their phone, causing Chippy to give up his identity with
a startled shriek.
