LEAD STORY:
"Lotus, iSeries on the Federal Aviation Administration radar"
The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) hopes to soar with a
new Lotus Domino e-mail system. Previously the air travel regulator
used cc:Mail software, which has been phased out. The FAA also moved
their e-mail servers from Microsoft NT boxes to iSeries 400s in hopes
of increasing Web application availability and decreasing the number
of servers to support.

[1] "Messaging vendors rally a round SIMPLE"
While it appears that SIMPLE will become the standard for instant
messaging (IM) connectivity, Lotus does have a few concerns with it.
The leading corporate IM vendor wonders how it will handle security
between service provider networks and how the privacy of presence
information will be protected.

[2] "WebSphere 4.0 reduces complexity"
Analysts say that beta testers of IBM's WebSphere 4.0 Advanced Server
Edition are telling them that the server is "significantly improved
over the previous versions." Key enhancements include full Java 2
Enterprise Edition certification, integration between messaging and
component paradigms via Java Message Service listener and message
beans and an XML-based administrator client.

[3] "The failure of CRM"
It might be wise to exericse a little caution when it comes to your
customer relationship management (CRM) implementation. A new report
from the Butler Group cautions that CRM has "a long way to go before
it even begins to live up to the industry hype." Plus, Gartner Group
and Meta Group say that more than half of all CRM implementations
fail to live up to expectations.

[4] "Microsoft releases Code Red cleanup"
Microsoft has made available for download on its Web site a utility
called Code Red Cleanup that relieves a machine from the worm's
symptoms and after-effects. The tool gets rid of malicious files
installed by Code Red and reboots the system to eliminate
memory-resident code. It also removes mappings installed by Code Red.
Users are also given the option to permanently disable the troubled
Internet Information Server software. The tool, however, does not
patch the flawed IIS software and systems administrators are warned
not to be lulled into a false sense of security. Also, additional
damage done through the back door installed by Code Red II is not
fixed by the tool.

THE MISSING LINK
A look at an off-the-wall story off the Web
-------------------------------------------------
"Gadget with more byte than bark"
Dog owners... listen up. Ever been frustrated because you just don't
know what's gotten your moody mutt so miffed? You can soon get the
answer straight from the horse's -- make that the DOG'S -- mouth.
Inventors in
Japan claim to have developed a high-tech canine translator. The
gadget, called the Bow-lingual, can supposedly interpret a dog's
barks and growls into human emotions. The Bow-lingual consists of a
small microphone, attached to the dog's collar, that "reads"
dog-speak by matching sounds to a set of pre-programmed wave
patterns. There are plans to adapt the technology so that anxious
owners, who are away from home, can be kept up to date with their
dog's feelings delivered straight to their handset.
