The most popular story on CNN.com for Sunday, Oct. 7? Not America pulling the trigger on the Taliban, but "Singer Britney Spears Killed in Car Accident." A prankster copied CNN's look and writing style, then exploited a (now quashed) quirk in the way Web browsers handle URLs to fool folks into thinking they were linking to a legitimate CNN article. The prankster said all he did to get the virtual rumor mill turning was to distribute a specially crafted URL to three users of AOL's Instant Messenger chat software.
