LEAD STORY
LOTUS LEANS ON IBM FOR CHANNEL DIRECTION | VARBusiness
Lotus Software's partner strategy is in transition now that IBM has
pulled the division closer to its own operations and lopped off
Lotus' general IT consulting practice. Some question where deals with
smaller solution providers focused on the mid market will fit into
Lotus' future.

WHEN TECHNOLOGY CHOPS MATTER | CNET
Incoming IBM chief executive Sam Palmisano has his work cut out for
him when it comes to Big Blue's software strategy. According to one
commentator, IBM's 1995 acquisition of Lotus can be considered a $3
billion-plus bust, since Microsoft owns the applications market and
Lotus Notes has failed to set the corporate world on fire.

IM START-UP ON CRASH COURSE WITH AOL | CNET
Messaging startup PalTalk plans to give its users access to AOL's
claimed 100 million registered users of its AOL Instant Messenger
(AIM) application. Several companies have tried to create messaging
product that connect their users to AOL's, but so far only Lotus'
Sametime messenger, which is licensed to use AOL's technology, has
been allowed to interoperate.

THE MISSING LINK | MGM trials film downloads

The mouse is making the MGM lion roar in cyberspace. MGM Home
Entertainment and Internet film distributor CinemaNow are making
movie downloads available for a short test period. The company wants
to know if folks are keen on renting their flicks via their
computers. The two companies are making two movies available for this
"pay-per-click" pilot program: "What's the Worst That Could Happen?"
and "The Man In The Iron Mask." It costs about the same as renting a
video -- from $1.99 to $5.99. No, you can't copy them, and there's a
24-hour viewing limit. If you don't have broadband and 550Mbps of
drive space, you may just want to head to Blockbuster instead.
