ROOKIE IM SERVICE CHALLENGING MAJOR PLAYERS | InfoWorld
Upstart instant messaging (IM) application Trillian is gaining ground
on established competition from Microsoft and AOL, according to new
research from Jupiter Media Metrix. Trillian owes its popularity to
its attempts to interoperate with other IM applications, but the
major IM players have been reluctant to cooperate for fear of losing
users.

STARTUP LINKS INSTANT MESSAGING TO APPS | InfoWorld
Vayusphere, a startup backed by the co-founder of Netscape, has
introduced a software platform that combines instant messaging (IM)
with an application integration gateway to connect workers with
back-end applications. It uses Web services protocols to initiate
real-time communications with people and applications.

FLAW IN MICROSOFT EXCHANGE CAN CAUSE DENIAL OF SERVICE | InfoWorld
According to a security alert issued Wednesday by Microsoft, a
critical flaw in Microsoft's Exchange 2000 e-mail server could allow
an attacker to send a message that could consume all of the server's

THE MISSING LINK | EPA urges recycling, not dumping, computers

While you're upgrading, your old computer isn't exactly biodegrading.
It's probably sitting in a landfill somewhere giving the environment
some toxic lead kisses and remembering the good ol' days when it got
turned on. But the dump won't be the destiny of dated hardware much
longer. The U. S. Environmental Protection Agency wants Americans to
treat their old PCs like aluminum cans and recycle them. EPA
officials plan to get computer carcasses classified as reusable and
encourage recycling. This is all in an effort to get the lead out of
the landfills. Many monitors are loaded with lead, which protects you
from nasty X-rays generated by the screen. But pitch the old PC into
a dump, and the lead doesn't protect -- it poisons.
