LEAD STORY
MAKING DOMINO A CITIZEN OF A WEB SERVICES WORLD | SearchDomino
Lotus made a big splash back at Lotusphere 2002 by pledging
allegiance to Web services. Now that the dust has settled, a Summit
Strategies analyst believes Web services will allow Domino to not
only better interoperate with other technologies, but also be used as
Web services components.

IBM CUTS HIT GLOBAL SERVICES, BUT SPARE LOTUS | e-Pro Magazine
Nearly 7,000 workers have now been laid off at IBM. The latest of the
long-rumored job cuts, according to workers' union Alliance@IBM, came
in Big Blue's microelectronics division. IBM may also let go 1,500
more workers in the U.K. and Australia. Lotus is not on the docket
for any layoffs in this round.

IBM SEES $2.0 - $2.5 BILLION CHARGE | Reuters
IBM said yesterday that it plans to take a pre-tax charge of $2
billion to $2.5 billion, primarily in the second quarter, to cover
job cuts from a restructuring amid weak technology spending. In
addition to recent layoffs, this week the company sold its
money-losing hard disk drive business to Hitachi.

JABBER FINDS SUCCESS WITH FREE IM SERVER | InternetWeek
According to instant messaging firm Jabber, more than 9,000 companies
have downloaded its free, 100-user instant messaging server. With
instant messaging growing in popularity, enterprises are struggling
with managing this application, which too often comes into companies
via free public clients.

THE MISSING LINK | Killer wires spilt my tea

Coffee and tea may get you wired, but wire can get your coffee and
tea. A survey released by none other than Microsoft found that one in
10 office workers blamed the maze of wires and cables around their
desks for making them spill their drinks. That's more than five
million cups of splattered tea every week in the U.K. The average
desk is tied up by nearly 50 feet of wiring -- enough to mug a mug,
steal its contents and throw it on the ground. None of the people
polled confessed to being a cubicle klutz. Before you say aloud,
"Someone in Redmond got paid to do this?," consider this -- Microsoft
is coming out with a wireless keyboard. Hmmm.
