LEAD STORY

ZOLLAR CREDITS LOTUS FOR ANSWERING DEMAND FOR IM | CRN

Lotus general manager Al Zollar shrugged off any notion that his
company may be trailing Microsoft in terms of messaging licenses. He
also credited Lotus with realizing there'd be an enterprise need for
instant messaging and then capitalizing on that demand.

LOTUS HOLDS EARLY IM LEAD | Network World
While fewer than 40% of businesses have a corporate IM system in
place, IDC predicts 90% will implement one by 2006. Lotus' Sametime
holds the early lead with 73% of the market, according to Osterman
Research.

GARTNER: JAVA, .NET FAILURE RATES RUN NECK IN NECK | ZDNet Australia
Gartner says about 70% of all Java implementations are unsuccessful
and it doesn't hold out hope that .NET initiatives will have a better
track record. Still, by 2005 the researcher forecasts a two-horse
development race with each platform holding a 40% market share.

FUJITSU, OTHERS LOOK AT ORACLE COLLABORATION SUITE | Computerworld
Fujitsu Siemens Computers is putting its Microsoft Exchange migration
on hold while it evaluates the Oracle Collaboration Suite. Analysts
say Oracle may have a ways to go before competing with Lotus or
Microsoft, but it could prey on customer reluctance to move to
Exchange Server 2000, which also requires adding Active Directory
support.

NEW GROUPWISE SNAGS SPAM, ENABLES IM | TechWeb
Version 6.5 of GroupWise, Novell's suite for e-mail, calendaring, and
contact and document management, will include spam filtering,
enhanced virus detection and enable instant messaging behind a
corporate firewall.

THE MISSING LINK | iSeePet sees pets get fed

When some pet owners in Japan go out of town, they just turn the dog
off. But road trippers who have Airedales instead of Aibos or kitties
that run on Deli Cat instead of Duracell need to make sure their pets
get fed while they're gone. Enter the aptly-named iSeePet, a water
tank and food dish hooked up to a Web camera. Pet owners can log onto
the iSeePet Web site from their hotel rooms, take a peek at the pet
dish and use the Web interface to feed or water accordingly. And it's
a guarantee that no animals will bite the hands that feed them.
