The company has loaded its ThinkPad notebooks with a chip that senses when the computer is accelerating. And when a computer accelerates, it's rarely a good thing. The quick-thinking chip acts like a kind of airbag -- it activates right before impact and protects the hard drive's read/write head until the commotion is over. So go ahead, drop that ThinkPad! It's okay. But if you spill coffee on the keyboard, you're still hosed.
