Called the Java Tools Community, its goal is to match Microsoft's marketing power in developing Web services applications. Negotiations are underway to bring Borland and IBM into the fold, which could be crucial to the group's success. NEWS IBM slices software staff (Associated Press) IBM is slashing 200 jobs in its software unit, roughly .5% of the division's overall staff. The cuts come after Big Blue eliminated 400 jobs in the group in September. NEWS E-mail authentication technique will take time (Security Pipeline) While anti-spam researchers are hard at work on a sender-authentication mechanism, their initial estimates of having the product ready in a few months seem overly optimistic. A computer programmer in California got so tired of being slammed by spam and pop-ups promising to enhance his physical, um, shortcomings that he actually did something about it. He responded in unkind -- threatening to torture, maim and kill the spammers. That didn't go over too well with police; the inbox vigilante's rage could cost him five years in prison and $250,000.
