Put on your thinking caps, because today we have a quick challenge for you. Below are definitions of three terms that should be familiar to any IT pro who works with networking, servers and Notes/Domino. Test your IT vocabulary by reading the definitions and then clicking on the answer link at the end of each one. Read carefully -- it's trickier than you might think!
- This is a specific version of Extensible Markup Language (XML) for Lotus Domino data. The Document Type Definition (DTD) for this technology defines the markup tags needed for working with XML within the Domino environment. This provides a consistent data format for non-Domino-equipped businesses when they access Domino data. (Answer)
- This is a method of resolving an IP address into a domain name, just as the domain name system (DNS) resolves domain names into associated IP addresses. One of the applications of this technology is as a spam filter. Here's how it works: Typically, a spammer uses an invalid IP address, one that doesn't match the domain name. This type of program inputs IP addresses of incoming messages to a DNS database. If no valid name is found to match the IP address, the server blocks that message. (Answer)
- This is a small program that runs on a server. The term was coined in the context of the Java applet, a small program that is sent as a separate file along with a Web (HTML) page. The advantage of this technology on servers with lots of traffic is that it can execute more quickly than CGI applications. Rather than causing a separate program process to be created, each user request is invoked as a thread in a single daemon process, meaning that the amount of system overhead for each request
is slight. (Answer)

Debugging LotusScript
This article provides an in-depth examination of the LotusScript debugger, including illustrations, examples and a list of common LotusScript error messages. You'll also find information about coding mishaps that can cause error messages.
Building Domino portlets for WebSphere
One way to integrate Domino applications into a WebSphere environment is to create Domino portlets to run in WebSphere Portal. To make it easier, IBM and its partners have created a plethora of pre-built portlets and tools to help Domino developers build portlets that meet their exact needs -- without having to write lots of code. |
