R5 gets new life
[IBM Lotus]
IBM Lotus has announced an extension of the end-of-service date to Notes/Domino Release 5. Originally scheduled to be retired in April of 2005, R5 will be extended until at least September of next year. According to the company, the extension is intended to allow customers more time to upgrade to the most current release of the Notes/Domino product. IBM also noted that when the new tentative date arrives, Lotus Notes and Domino 6 will have been in service for three years. An exact end-of-service date will be announced at least 12 months prior to the EOS. Lotus has already announced that it will retire most R5 certification exams at the end of November.

Ideax premieres Domino Webview Toolkit
[Ideax]
The Domino Webview toolkit from Netherlands-based Ideax lets Domino developers create Lotus Notes client-like views in Web applications. Views built with this toolkit support, for example, quick search, alternating row colors, keyboard commands for opening documents and navigation (Enter, PgUp, PgDn), plus logic that 'remembers' its users -- i.e., returns users to the same position they were in when they left.

Targeted at professional Domino development companies, the technology can be easily implemented in Web-enabled applications. And since the full source code is included, developers can adapt all functions to suit their particular needs. The license allows royalty free redistribution of this technology once embedded in Domino applications. A five-minute demo is available on the company's Web site.

Fatwire extends its Domino Bridge
[Fatwire]
Fatwire Software Corp., a Mineola, N.Y.-based content management vendor, has released a new add-on module that enables its flagship Content Server software to interoperate with Lotus Notes and Domino. Content Server is designed to help an enterprise's knowledge workers manage all types of content, such as documents, Web content, images, or rich media. According to the company, the module, called Domino Bridge, enhances the infrastructure capabilities of Notes and Domino by enabling the development of applications that access Notes and Domino content. Domino Bridge thereby allows, for instance, the integration of Web-based content with data in Lotus repositories. Domino Bridge is available immediately.

DYS aims to lower Lotus TCO
[DYS Analytics]
DYS Analytics Inc., based in Wellesley, Mass., has upgraded its Control family of application performance management software for several Lotus products. The Control offerings aim to reduce the total cost of ownership for Lotus applications by helping enterprises cope with spam, records retention requirements and increasingly complex IT networks.

Control 4.2 for Domino offers new trending and mailbox size reports, as well as notifications for Notes users when they fail to adhere to corporate messaging policies. The new iteration of Control for Lotus IM and Web Conferencing provides new chat logging capabilities, keyword searches and alerting, IM conversation tracking for easy archiving and "drill downs" into the Sametime administrative page allows IT staff to monitor process status and quickly implement fixes. Control for Lotus Team Workplace/QuickPlace 4.2 boasts what the vendor calls the missing centralized management capabilities needed by IT for production-grade team workspace support, including a streamlined, enterprise-wide view of Team Workplace disk, storage and network consumption that assist in Workplace maintenance and cleanup, capacity planning and server load balancing.

The Missing Link

Wales of a deal
[The Register]
Know any Welsh speakers who long to use OpenOffice? Who doesn't? Tell them their "llong" has come in (that's Welsh for "ship"). A company has created Welsh versions of the software package complete with a Welsh spell checker. Given the probability that Welsh is Europe's oldest living language, is there even a word for "software"? Yes -- "meddalwedd." This news brings hope to those waiting for a Gaelic version of Domino.
