Once flaunted, IBM shrugs off lost services deal
[The New York Times (registration required)]
When IBM's seven-year, $5 billion services deal with J. P. Morgan Chase was first announced, Big Blue touted the deal as the beginning of the on-demand revolution, triggering a period when many of the world's biggest companies would pay someone else to provide them with technology services. Following the deal's cancellation this week, many are wondering whether IBM's vision was actually an illusion.

Cultural differences pose e-mail challenges
[CNN]
A new study suggests geographic and cultural differences impact the way people use e-mail, potentially harming business relationships and corporate transactions. For instance, the French dislike long, sloppy messages, Germans value tone over content and Italians don't mind spelling mistakes and are often slow to reply.

ADVICE:  Ask Michael Lazar: Back up using runbckup command takes too long
Dear Mike: We are running Lotus 6.5 on an AS/400 270, V5R2. We back up using the runbckup command to an Ultrium 3580 tape drive. To restore a person's mailbox we use rstdev after ending the Domino server. We have approximately 300 mail files, and restoring one mailbox can take up to eight hours, which is unacceptable. Is there something we could do differently to speed up the process?

TIPS:  Tip: Moving attachments on a Web form
This tip is a Domino solution for hiding the attachments at the bottom of a Web form, and placing them at a designated spot elsewhere in the form. It uses icons that represent the program used to create/read them.

GLOSSARY:  Domino Dictionary Challenge: Information initiation
This is the delivery of information on the Web that is initiated by the information server rather than by the information user or client, as it usually is.

The Missing Link

Men -- masters of the search domains
[vnunet.com]
Men may be loath to ask for directions when they're behind the wheel. But get them behind a mouse, and they don't need any help, thank you very much. More than half of the men in a Yahoo poll could find what they needed online in less than a minute. Nearly 20% of the women took 10 minutes or more to find what they needed -- evidently a lot more women get distracted when they surf. Some analysts tried to explain Yahoo's findings by invoking "left side of the brain" versus "right side of the brain" arguments, but the truth is that years of training on the remote control have helped make man the master of the Googleverse.
