If a hammer is all one has, all problems look like a nail. You've probably heard that _expression_. Variations on the theme play out every day. Why do we worry about new CIOs or Chief Architects on the premises? Well, the solution to a department's problems usually looks like the last system they worked on, right? And when consolidation and migration are in the cards, there is more impetus to "get out the hammer."

The mandate for consolidation is always with us, and it is naturally a time to look at updating or even swapping out established platforms. For a look at one way that can play out in the Domino world today, see Expert Technical Advice cited below in this newsletter issue.

A Microsoft migration seems always on the burner somewhere. It is a particular problem in the Domino and Notes world these days, where competitive Microsoft products are increasingly more familiar to more people.

These days, the Domino developer is under double the pressure to roll out new revs, create new user functions, fix bugs and tune performance -- because the Microsoft advocate is ready to say: "Why don't we just rip it out and start over?" Such projects can become very black holes, and platform politics can overwhelm good engineering sense.

One thing that can help the Domino and Notes communities is a renewed effort on the part of IBM/Lotus to update the platform. When IBM took over Lotus in 1995, it did only a fair job of picking the easy fruit in the marketplace. Without Notes Godfather Ray Ozzie, the innovation in Domino and Notes have been slightly lacking. This week, IBM will disclose much more on Workplace, its effort to innovate this key platform into the next computing era.

IBM's initial efforts to promote Workplace should at least slow down some CIO's eager to pull the plug on Notes. Will Big Blue follow through? That is one of the major stories we will be following. Have you encountered managers hell-bent to displace Domino? Do you have questions about IBM's Workplace plans? As in the past, be assured: We are here to make sure your voice is heard and your questions are answered. We always want to hear from you, so send us an e-mail.

    Regards,
    Jack Vaughan
