"Intel or Unix? Customers face a tough choice"
Intel or Unix? Intel's more powerful server chips along with
Microsoft's tweaking of its OS are making the choice a lot harder for
corporations. Some analysts say Windows 2000 has really helped
Microsoft become more of a player in the arena of large-scale
corporate applications thanks to its stability and scalability.

[1.] "Workstation sales falling, warns report"
Some recent data show worldwide workstation shipments fell 9% in the
three months to the end of March. This slowdown may be more than just
a result of the US economy -- it may signal a trend where low-end
workstations are giving way to high-end PCs. Sun has seen its
workstation sales fall nearly 7% in a year, while HP has seen a 35%
drop.

[2.] "Sun's McNealy: Forecast was wild guess"
Sun's Scott McNealy called his company's forecast of 15% revenue
growth in 2002 a rough estimate rather than a specific target since
IT spending is still a little unpredictable these days. The economy
has inspired Sun to make its employees take a week off this summer.

[3.] "Microsoft sees server growth, no cost worries"
Microsoft's Steve Ballmer said his company is looking at the big
picture -- a picture that shows server software bringing in
wheelbarrows full of cash over the next few years. Ballmer also said
his company is gunning for Sun and Oracle.

[4.] "Caldera CEO: MS right to shun open source"
Penguin proponents got plenty peeved when a Microsoft official dissed
open source. But MS has non-MS supporters in its corner. The CEO of
Caldera Systems says said he thinks Microsoft was right in its claim
that the General Public License doesn't make much business sense and
doubts whether companies can build valid, supportable business models
around it.

A look at an off-the-wall story from the Web...

"Quirky inventory cataloged online"
Not every dot-com with an offbeat business model is dead. Take the
online version of Philip Cable's American Science & Surplus, for
instance. The brick-and-mortar version of the catalog business is
chugging along after more than 60 years by selling everything from
recycled camera batteries to "owl pellets" -- the stuff left over
after an owl eats a small woodland creature. Cable is taking a
measured approach to selling his junk, er, wares to online shoppers.
He doesn't expect to make millions; he's just looking to expand
beyond his offline customer base.
