LEAD STORY

"Sun's Solaris executives look into the future"
Solaris executives looked into the future in an interview at JavaOne.
What they saw was that the Web-Based Enterprise Management protocol
will mean system administrators will only have to maintain one set of
agents on their target machines. As for the upcoming Solaris 8
update, it will give system administrators better hooks
into the operating system to leverage their efforts better, they
said.

[1.] "Java: Our cup runneth over"
San Francisco's Golden Gate has become more like a floodgate, with
Java developers by the thousands spilling into town for JavaOne. Many
of these folks are just trying to keep up with a technology that
changes faster than Starbuck's can open a new store. So many
products, so much change, so little time -- Java's jolt can be
overwhelming.

[2.] "Tech giants promote use of WBEM standards"
A number of open source projects and a group of nine companies
including Sun Microsystems, HP and IBM have formed an alliance to
promote the use of a set of open system management standards known as
Web-Based Enterprise Management. The alliance was announced at the
JavaOne show.

[3.] "JavaOne heats up as FatWire challenges Vignette"
FatWire Software issued a $100,000 challenge at the JavaOne show to
Vignette to compete in a speed trial measuring the development time
of the two companies' Internet software applications. FatWire is
putting its UpdateEngine5 dynamic content management software and Web
application assembly system up against Vignette's software suite. The
challenge was made in the wake of Vignette's recent announcement that
its content management software is now fully Java compliant. There
has been no word from Vignette yet.

[4.] "Suns Joy rapturous over Jxta"
Sun's new Jxta effort aims to create a standard, open-source
technology for file-swapping services of the type pioneered by
Napster and Gnutella. The company hopes to attract enough developers
to create a critical mass around Jxta and combat Microsoft's .Net
campaign, the centerpiece of a more proprietary vision of Net-based
applications. The next few months will decide whether Sun's efforts
will pay off.

[5.] "JavaOne: Coordination needed to achieve code reuse"
Companies need to coordinate Java use across their businesses in
order to achieve the full benefits of reduced costs, time-to-market
and improved code reusability, IT managers at JavaOne said. Cultural
and political issues are as important as technology in implementing
Java for e-business, they said while sharing techniques they have
used to get everyone working in the same Java direction.

A look at an off-the-wall story from the Web...

"Bread as a display device -- we have pictures"
The Java toaster has made its debut. At the JavaOne Conference in San
Francisco, a Brunel University design student unveiled the appliance,
which uses an embedded Java device to access the weather forecast,
then burns the appropriate weather symbol onto a piece of toast. It
may seem pointless, but this imaginative appliance could soon turn
food into the hottest new advertising medium. Well, maybe not, but
let's toast the accomplishment anyway.
