LEAD STORY

"Microsoft slaps back at Sun in Java spat"
The verbal ping pong continues - now Microsoft has responded to Sun's
ad campaign calling for users to rise up and demand Java in Windows
XP (reminiscent of "I want my MTV" back in the early 80s). Microsoft
has released a statement to explain why it yanked Java support for
XP. Redmond accuses Sun of hypocrisy and argues the Palo Alto,
Calif.-based company "has taken every step possible to prevent
Microsoft from shipping its award winning Java virtual machine."

[1] "Industry divided over Java on Windows XP PCs"
Now that Java won't be brewing in Windows XP or a forthcoming Web
browser, PC makers and Internet service providers are trying to
decide if they should step in and bundle Java support into their PCs
and services. Dell's gonna do it; Compaq is not. Windows XP users
will be able to a download a Java Virtual Machine from Microsoft's
Web site or from a third-party provider.

[2] "Microsoft loses request to delay antitrust remedy hearings"
No delay. A U.S. appeals court shot down Microsoft's request to delay
remedy hearings until the Supreme Court decides if it will review the
monopoly case. A federal district court judge will be appointed to
preside over hearings and issue a remedy. Legal analysts doubt the
High Court will touch the case.

[3] "IBM's embrace of Linux a little too tight, analyst says"
Big Blue is propping up the penguin for the enterprise, going so far
as to say Linux could replace all Unix OSes one day. But some
analysts think IBM's Linux strategy is at odds with the open-source
community. A Giga analyst said "IBM wants to drive Linux towards the
high end and take out Sun Solaris, but the Linux community doesn't
care about that."

[4] "Microsoft plans Web server for appliances"
Look for a dedicated Web server to roll out of Redmond early next
year. The Windows .Net Web server will shoot for a piece of the
growing appliance server market and maybe try to steal some of
Linux's thunder there.

[5] "Microsoft releases new security tools"
There's more info on the Web about Microsoft's new security tools.
HFNetChk is a command-line tool that points out which security
patches are on a network's machines and checks those patches against
the latest releases. The other tool, the Microsoft Personal Security
Advisory (MPSA), is a Web site users visit to get a report of their
computer's security settings along with recommendations for security
patches, changing weak passwords, or improving security settings.
Visit

for HFNetChk info and www.microsoft.com/security/mpsa/start.asp for MPSA info.

"The U.S. of e"
Ever watch late night infomercials heralding the cheap riches one can
find at government auctions? Now, you only have to log onto the Web
to find such deals. That's right, the U.S. government is auctioning
everything from donkeys to seized luxury homes on the Internet. Early
returns indicate the strategy is working. The government agency that
handles surplus vehicles and office furnishings has racked up $8
million in sales and nearly 60,000 registered viewers. So how much
would a donkey be? Between $130 and $1,550 (but they have to be
picked up in Wyoming or Colorado).
