LEAD STORY
"Infinite loop bug can crash Windows"

The in-house security team at Telia Telecom claims to have spotted a
bug in all versions of Windows, which could be exploited as a
security vulnerability and crash a machine. The "URL infinite
loophole" could be used to exhaust all system resources until a
Windows system blue-screens or crashes. But a Microsoft spokesman
says the glitch is not a security vulnerability, although a fix for
the bug will be in the next Service Pack.

[1] "Microsoft marries consulting, services divisions"
One division is apparently better than two at Microsoft. The company
has merged its support services and consulting divisions, which will
translate into a one-stop service for business clients. Customers
will be able to access support from Microsoft and its partners and
contract consulting services all at once if they so desire. Redmond
calls this new division the "kickstand" of .Net software support.
Better a kickstand than quicksand.

[2] "Microsoft, Hyperion propose XML specification for data
analysis"
Microsoft's announcement of a proposed XML specification for data
analysis in conjunction with database analysis toolmaker Hyperion is
more than just an announcement; it's another salvo in the war between
Redmond and Redwood Shores. The XML for Analysis specification, an
XML-based OLAP Query API, has collared some big names in the
business-intelligence market, but Oracle isn't lending its support.
Microsoft and Hyperion say the standard will accelerate the adoption
of XML-based analytical Web services.

[3] "Even experts confounded by XML Schema"
The World Wide Web Consortium could be just weeks away from releasing
its XML Schema specification, but can anyone understand it? Critics
have railed on the specification for being too complex, and even some
W3C insiders say future versions should be incompatible with this
first release so as not to repeat "the flaws" of the first version.
Even so, Microsoft supports the schema and will include it in the
second beta version of Visual Studio.Net.

[4] "Microsoft tunes whistler server"
Here's another article about Microsoft adding features to Beta 2 of
Whistler server that will make (according to MS anyway) deploying the
OS easier, especially for Active Directory.

[5] "IBM to buy Informix database business for $1B"
Big Blue is breaking out some big bucks -- one billion of them to buy
the database business of Informix. Oracle will feel this one-two
punch, and you may want to pay your respects to Sybase, according to
one strategist. What's left of Informix will be called Ascential
Software.

A look at an off-the-wall story off the Web

"Coder by day, love machine by night"

A few decades ago, Helen Gurley Brown's book "Sex and the Single
Girl" enlightened the public about the love life of single females. A
new "unscientific" poll from IT job site JustTechJobs.com may do the
same for IT workers. According to the poll, adult male high tech
workers have sex 37% more often than men in other careers. More than
7,500 men who work in information systems responded to a marketing
poll question about sex habits. The results indicate they have sex
108 times a year, about 37% more often than respondents in a similar
survey done by Men's Health magazine. So, if you're looking for a
more active love life, get an IT job.
