LEAD STORY
"Analyst: Right tools, people and policies keys to success in
Windows-centric world"

Gartner Research Director Ronni Colville talks about the criteria
companies should use for selecting management tools for Windows 2000.
He said the tools people choose to manage the desktops in their
businesses should serve their own gods, not the MS god.

[1] "Update: Microsoft warns of serious Windows 2000 hole"
Microsoft Corp. says there is an extremely serious flaw in an
extension included in Windows 2000 that could allow a malicious
hacker to gain complete control of any computer running the Internet
Information Services 5.0 software built into that operating system.
Microsoft said the vulnerability is caused by an unchecked buffer in
an extension that provides native support for Internet printing
capabilities within Windows 2000. The software vendor urged all IIS
5.0 users to install a new patch that is supposed to fix the problem.

[2] "New media player escapes Windows"
Microsoft is taking legal action against Web sites circulating a
rogue version of Windows Media Player 8. The company is issuing
letters demanding Web sites pull down a supposed beta, or trial
version, of the software. Many of the Web sites are operating
overseas and out of Microsoft's immediate reach. Distribution of the
program raises confusion over Windows Media Player 8, which Microsoft
said it would integrate with the forthcoming Windows XP operating
system rather than offer as a separate downloadable program.

[3] "Spokesman says company doesn't charge twice for software"
Microsoft Corp. is offering computer makers prizes to tattle on
companies that try to order machines without the Windows operating
system. Analysts said companies could conclude they are effectively
paying for Windows twice: once when they buy a personal computer with
Windows preinstalled, and once when they sign a licensing agreement
to buy software from Microsoft.

A look at an off-the-wall story off the Web

"Big Brother beverage tracker"
A study claims the cash from as many as four drinks in every
750-milliliter bottle of liquor fails to make it into the register,
due to sloppy bartending. Now VitaLink, producer of the study and the
"Plug 'N Pour" Beverage Tracker System, believes it has an answer for
over-generous drink makers and parsimonious publicans. It's "Plug `N
Pour" is a high-tech pour spout that keeps track of every drink
poured via an embedded microchip and wireless radio transmitter. Some
bartenders say it takes the creativity out of their jobs. "No more
freestyle pouring," said Danny Norway, director of the Professional
Bartenders School in San Francisco.
