Redmond is reworking its single highest administrative privilege so you can better manage AD. Beta 3 version of Windows 2002 Server will sport the ability to delete objects and attributes established in the directory schema. Schema Delete, as it's called, should be included in Windows 2002 when it ships early next year. Novell's eDirectory and IPlanet's Directory Server 5.0, which shipped Thursday, already lets you delete schema. For now, the hardware changes, which dropped the spec from four CPUs to two, and memory from eight gigs to four, will stand. SOURCE: The Register http://www.theregister.co.uk/content/4/18726.html [2] "Compaq drops 32-way Microsoft DataCenter server" Compaq said earlier this week it will get rid of the 32-way servers it was selling preloaded with the DataCenter version of Windows 2000. Apparently, server sales haven't been so hot. One analyst said the 32-way servers are too far ahead of where "the market wants to be" and that customers want to buy these types of servers from the manufacturers, not an OEM. SOURCE: Network World http://www.nwfusion.com/news/2001/0501compaq.html [3] "Microsoft hacked, once, twice, three times" Apparently, defacements come in threes -- at least they did for Microsoft this week. Hackers spanked three of Redmond's international Web sites -- the attackers likely used the exploit in IIS 5 the company warned about. Guess the company forgot to patch? The hacker group Prime Suspectz are the prime suspects here. SOURCE: vnunet http://www.vnunet.com/News/1121441 [4] "Exploit puts pressure on for IIS Web Server patch" Don't forget to patch! Network protection company eEye Digital Security says don't delay patching the flaw in systems running Windows 2000 and its IIS 5.0 Web server software. A program that would allow crackers to exploit the problem has been made public online. The problem is so, well, problematic because it exists in all default installations of Windows 2000 with the IIS 5.0 server. MS has posted a patch on its Web site. The song swappers and the sultans of software are said to be working on a deal wherein Napster would use MS' technology to help build "a secure, copyright-friendly version of the online song-swapping service." Microsoft says it will try to be more open with its products' source codes through a "shared-source" model. But don't look for Microsoft to go open source anytime soon, or ever. A company official says the business model for open source may look good, but it cannot help build a mass market or make quality software broadly accessible to consumers.
