Microsoft today. The company will talk about the new annuity-based licensing and agency model for its channel, a project code-named Boulder. When October rolls around, the usual Enterprise Agreements (EAs) will die, and an annuity-based model will be born, at least that's the buzz around the grapevine. This means Redmond would take over the negotiation, billing and collection responsibilities that large-account resellers normally handle. Customers face a tough choice [1] "Marathon ships high availability solution for W2k" Marathon Technologies is running with Win2k more than one year after the OS began running out of Redmond. The new Windows 2000-based Marathon Assured Availability solution gives IT administrators a product that is roughly the cost of a two-node cluster that can match or exceed the availability guarantees provided through the exclusive Windows Datacenter Program. Marathon has also introduced pre-configured systems with Exchange 2000 Server. One Microsoft official says if your company is rolling out Win2k, keep on rolling and don't worry about doing an immediate upgrade to the XP version. But if your company has Windows 95 or 98 on its PCs, it's time to jump. One Gartner analyst suggests companies that don't plan to install the desktop version of Windows 2000 until next year might want to go directly to Windows XP instead. Ballmer also said he feels Microsoft's current cost structure is solid, despite the state of the US economy. But MS has non-MS supporters in its corner. The CEO of Caldera Systems says said he thinks Microsoft was right in its claim that the General Public License doesn't make much business sense and doubts whether companies can build valid, supportable business models around it. Intel's more powerful server chips along with Microsoft's tweaking of its OS are making the choice a lot harder for corporations. Some analysts say Windows 2000 has really helped Microsoft become more of a player in the arena of large-scale corporate applications thanks to its stability and scalability. The first provides round-the-clock availability by enabling online disk management; the second reduces costs and streamlines storage by moving space-hogging files from expensive hard disks to inexpensive remote storage. With these two, Honneycutt believesWin2k has taken a significant step up from its NT predecessor. After an in-depth look, Norian gives a slight edge to VPN-1 Gateway as a product that can fit comfortably in most environments, but he says F-Secure VPN+ is the price leader if you can manage its higher level of complexity. Take the online version of Philip Cable's American Science & Surplus, for instance. The brick-and-mortar version of the catalog business is chugging along after more than 60 years by selling everything from recycled camera batteries to "owl pellets" -- the stuff left over after an owl eats a small woodland creature. Cable is taking a measured approach to selling his junk, er, wares to online shoppers. He doesn't expect to make millions; he's just looking to expand beyond his offline customer base.
