Because of this, many users, especially IT personnel, create numerous share accesses to files and folders that are easily accessible from remote sites. A workstation that has file and print sharing enabled can pose a security threat not only to the data present on the workstation's drive, but to the organization as a whole. To prevent users other than administrators from creating a shared resource, especially on key servers and workstations, the network administrator can edit the Registry and perform the following changes: - Run Regedt32.exe - Then select HKEY_LOCALMACHINE\System\CurrentCOntrolSet\Services\LanmanServer\Shares. - Select Shares and all its sub keys. - On the Security menu, Click Permissions - Grant everyone group read permission for shares and each of its sub keys. -------------------------------------------------------------------- Adesh Rampat is a member of the Association of Internet Professionals, the Institute for Network Professionals and the International Webmasters Association. He has also lectured extensively on a variety of topics. ==================================================================== ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ DID YOU LIKE THIS TIP? ==================================================================== Whether you loved it or hated it, why not let us know?
