"Denying access to shared resources"
By Adesh Rampat

Shared resources offer a simple and secure method of accessing
information through the network, depending on which equipment the
resources are on. Because of this, many users, especially IT
personnel, create numerous share accesses to files and folders that
are easily accessible from remote sites. A workstation that has file
and print sharing enabled can pose a security threat not only to the
data present on the workstation's drive, but to the organization as a
whole.

To prevent users other than administrators from creating a shared
resource, especially on key servers and workstations, the network
administrator can edit the Registry and perform the following
changes:

- Run Regedt32.exe

- Then select
HKEY_LOCALMACHINE\System\CurrentCOntrolSet\Services\LanmanServer\Shares.

- Select Shares and all its sub keys.

- On the Security menu, Click Permissions

- Grant everyone group read permission for shares and each of its sub
keys.
