LEAD STORY
"Microsoft fixes bugs in IIS again"
Microsoft is patching up IIS again. Redmond's TechNet site is
stocking a new patch for IIS versions 4.0 and 5.0 that fixes three
flaws in the IIS software, including a flaw that makes IIS vulnerable
to DOS attacks. The new patch also corrects new flaws created by old
patches.

[5] Zona report: Microsoft likely to cast off ASP partners

[1] "Microsoft officially ships Windows 2000 SP2"
It's official -- Windows 2000 Service Pack 2 has now come down from
Mt. Redmond. SP2 is a bit like a "Greatest Hits" package; it is an
accumulation of fixes that have been released since SP1, plus
everything that's in SP1. That makes the network install more than
100 MB.

[2] "Banish bandwidth blues with Win2k SP2, slimline version"
Got bandwidth? If not, a slimline express version of Windows 2000 SP2
may be for you. Microsoft has made available this version which you
can use to perform a Web install, so after the initial download it
checks to see the components you require, and only installs them at a
cost of some 10 to 30 megs. The download is at
http://msvaus.www.conxion.com/download/win2000platform/sp2/sp2/nt5/en-us/sp2express.exe.

[3] "Take that! Linux beats MS in benchmark test"
The penguin is beaming. The Transaction Processing Performance
Council released new data this week showing that IBM's upcoming DB2
7.2 release running on Linux 2.4.3 outperforms SQL Server 2000
running on Windows 2000 in the 100GB category. IBM is proud;
Microsoft says keep in mind this was a database test and not an
operating system evaluation.

[4] "Open source group slams Microsoft"
Boys, boys, boys!!! The open source community and Microsoft are at it
again in a battle that seems to pit science versus capitalism. This
latest round comes from Mister Linux Linus Torvalds and nine of his
comrades, who called Microsoft the "practitioner of the deliberately
incompatible." Earlier this month, a MS official dissed free software
licensing, calling it a threat to intellectual property rights,
security and the software business.

[5] "Zona report: Microsoft likely to cast off ASP partners"
A new report from Zona Research states that Microsoft will soon
become "the Internet's biggest application service provider." The
study concludes that the software giant will begin hosting its
applications through its own ASP and will likely rid itself of some
of its ASP partners.

[1] "VPN configurations to avoid under Windows"
Setting up a VPN incorrectly can cause your network to malfunction
and pose serious security risks. Brien Posey explains two VPN
configurations that you want to avoid. First, don't create a VPN
connection on a computer running Window's Internet Connection Sharing
service. Second, don't connect your VPN server to the Internet
without a firewall between the two.

If you're still running Windows 95/98 on your desktops, check out
this batch of version-related tips from MCP Bill Detwiler. Detwiler
explains how to install drivers using Infinst.exe, how to deal with
Wininit.exe and Vmm32.vxd problems, and (our personal favorite) how
to stop your computer from accessing the floppy drive every time you

"Windows 2000 DNS"
By: Herman Knief
The Domain Name System is a directory of registered computer names
and IP addresses that can be instantly located. Without proper design
and administration of DNS, computers wouldn't be able to locate each
other on the network, and applications like email and web browsing
wouldn't be feasible. Administrators need this information to make
their networks work. Windows 2000 DNS, Second Edition provides a
technical overview to DNS, WINS, and how to design and administer
them for optimal performance in a Windows 2000 environment.

A look at an off-the-wall story off the Web

"Web surfers hunt like animals, researchers find"
Computer scientists are getting primal when it comes to simplifying
the search for material on the Internet. A scientist named Ed Chi at
Xerox's research center is working on a program that determines a Web
site's usability. Chi is applying foraging theories developed by
ecologists decades ago to his program because he believes people surf
the Web much the same way animals prowl for prey. He wants to make
surfing an intuitive exercise rather than one where users feel like
stranded tourists in a foreign country.
