"Defragmentation of the Exchange Database"
By Adesh Rampat

Here's the situation: You examine mailbox resources and notice that
there are some mailboxes belonging to employees no longer employed
with the company. Some belong to key former employees and need to be
kept, so you decide to move these mailboxes to another server and
delete the unimportant ones. What happens then to the size of the
information store? Does it decrease automatically?

Exchange periodically performs a defragmentation of its databases.
Exchange 5.5 and above perform online disk defragmentation on a
regular basis. Previous versions of Exchange would require that you
perform an offline defragmentation. The results of disk
defragmentation would be logged in the application event log and
would appear in the following format:

Event ID: 1221
Source: MSExchangeIS Private
Type: Information
Category: General
Description: The database has 100 megabytes of free space after
online defragmentation has terminated.

Sometimes though, after moving or deleting mailboxes that used up a
large amount of disk space, it may be necessary to perform an offline
defragmentation. The ESEUTIL command can perform this operation. But
before running this command, do a backup first, and stop the
information store service.

To defragment the private information store perform the following:
eseutil /d /ispriv.

To defragment the public information store perform the following:
eseutil /d /ispub.
