[1] "Windows XP will make Internet unstable - top security expert"
Windows XP -- will it do to the Internet what a quake does to a
building? Security expert Steve Gibson tells The Register that the OS
could make the Internet unstable because it will let too many people
launch uncontrollable denial-of-service attacks to whichever IP
address they want.

[2] "Microsoft allies dismiss new monopoly allegations"
The empire strikes back. A trade group called the Association for
Competitive Technology took a shot at Microsoft's foes, refuting
allegations that Windows XP and the .Net strategy are Redmond's game
pieces in a game of Internet monopoly. Microsoft founded the trade
group that did the refuting.

[3] "Sun pushes new version of Java 2 Standard Edition"
Sun is showing off the "ultrasound" of its new baby, J2SE version
1.4. The baby is due this fall -- that's when a Windows version
should be ready. Version 1.4 will come loaded with Java API for XML
processing and a new scalable network I/O (input/output) API for
high-performance Web and application servers. The XML Parser will be
integrated as part of the core platform.

[5] "Marathon cozies up to Microsoft"
Marathon has been running with Redmond for four years, but it's never
been an official partnership. Now it is. Marathon and Microsoft have
agreed on a deal to let Marathon resell Windows 2000 and Exchange
2000 in its pre-configured "Assured Availability" systems. Marathon
also enjoys access to source code and MS' lab.

[6] "E-mail virus hoax makes users do the dirty work"
What kind of sick minds are out there? Someone has created a fake
virus that will ask you to delete the sweet, innocent and uninfected
sulfnbk.exe file. This little hoax flies under the anti-virus radar
because it isn't a virus. But if you obey the message and delete the
file and forward the e-mail to others, the effect is downright viral
in nature.

[1] "Microsoft's 2002 Server impresses"
It looks like Microsoft could have a winner with Windows 2002 Server
- at least that's what InfoWorld senior analyst P.J. Connolly thinks.
Better scalability, stability, administration and security tools make
it an attractive package for Windows shops seeking greater memory and
storage capabilities. That said, Connolly still recommends waiting
for the release of the first 2002 service pack before making any
implementation plans.

A look at an off-the-wall story off the Web

'Hormel is resigned to use of 'spam' in Net slang'
Sure, it's side-splittingly funny when a bunch of Vikings sing a
chorus of "Spam, spam, spam, spam..." but who can blame the folks at
Hormel for getting a little edgy every time the name of their most
famous brand of "meat" product is used to denote something most email
users despise? Still, Hormel has decided not to buck popular culture
and says it will no longer fight as aggressively to stamp out the
derogatory use of the term spam. They only ask that when using the
word to describe their luncheon meat, the word be capitalized so that
the terms can be more easily distinguished. Perhaps a better
differentiator is this: One you eat. The other you delete.
