LEAD STORY
"XP hits the home stretch as Microsoft freezes UI"

The Microsoft release of one of the final interim builds of Windows
XP represents a "point-of-no-return" in many ways. Build 2481 marks
the finalization of XP's UI -- meaning the UI won't change between
now and the final release. In addition to the UI freeze, build 2481
also finalizes hardware compatibility. Although this build doesn't
contain all the hardware drivers Microsoft intends to ship in the box
with XP, the company doesn't intend to add device support beyond what
is currently planned.

[1] "Security hole found in Exchange 2000"
Microsoft has revealed a security hole in its Exchange 2000 Server.
The hole could allow an attacker to target corporate employees with
programs that delete their email. The flaw affects only companies
that use a program included by Microsoft in its Exchange mail server
package. Known as Outlook Web Access, the program allows companies to
offer email access to employees via a Web browser.

[2] "Survey: Mixed results for Win2k"
Windows 2000 Professional stacks up well against earlier Windows
versions, says a new report measuring OS reliability. The Giga
Information Group/Sunbelt Software survey also found that Windows
2000 Server cut unnecessary server reboots by 64% compared with
Window NT Server 4.0. However, the server OS did not fare so well
against products from rival Unix. According to the respondents,
Windows 2000 Server required 300% more unnecessary reboots than Unix.

[3] "Microsoft: Asia sales to grow 27%"
Michael Rawding, Microsoft's president, Asia, says the company's
newly launched Office XP is a money-spinner that will boost its Asian
business. Rawding says consumer affluence and increased government
spending in Asia will spur its sales there this year, offsetting the
economic slump in the U.S. and other countries.

A look at an off-the-wall story off the Web

"Hot on the scent of information"

When it comes to looking for information on the Web, the term
"hunting" may be more accurate than "surfing." According to research
being conducted by the Xerox Palo Alto Research Center, humans seek
info on the Net with the same food-gathering techniques employed by
animals -- by following the scent. But we're not talking "smell"
here. The research scientists use the term "information scent" when
describing cues -- like images and hyperlinks -- that people use to
decide which paths to follow in their Internet searches.
