[1] "Gartner predicts massive increase in security spending"
Gartner has been looking into its crystal ball again - it sees U.S.
companies increasing their security spending ten times the current
average by 2011. And while the ball is out, Gartner also sees eight
out of ten enterprises using the Internet as a key part of their
business by 2004.

[2] "WinXP security row: Expert hits back"
First, security expert Steve Gibson said Windows XP, with its "raw
sockets," was an invitation for hackers to fire DoS salvos across the
Internet. Then Microsoft said, in a nutshell, "whatever." Now Gibson
says Redmond is lying when it claims that older Windows versions also
supported raw sockets.

[3] "Messaging may boost Windows XP sales"
Could Windows Messenger be the window of opportunity for XP? Some
analysts think Windows Messenger, which mixes instant messaging with
videoconferencing, telephony and collaboration, could be a cash cow
catalyst that causes consumers to upgrade to XP

[4] "HP, Compaq back away from Wintel server plans"
Compaq and HP have decided not to resell 32-processor systems based
on Unisys' cellular multi-processing (CMP) technology. Unisys and
Microsoft worked together to develop a large server and operating
system that would pit Wintel against Sun. Compaq doesn't think the
industry will be ready for this stuff until Intel delivers its second
generation of 64-bit processors, code-named McKinley.

[5] "Microsoft signs UK hosting deal for .Net"
Host Europe will be the host body for .Net services in the UK. The

[1] "Getting up to speed with XP"
The four authors of this positive and in-depth feature certainly did
their Windows XP homework. This seventeen-page analysis of XP covers
everything from system requirements and new features to
backup/restore capabilities and networkability. While some of the
information is geared toward consumers, IT professionals will benefit
as well. It is one of the more thorough reviews of XP we've seen so
far.

[2] "Collaborating with Microsoft"
David Haskin's opinion piece details two new collaboration features
available in Office XP -- the ability to automatically send documents
for revision via e-mail and the Web server-based SharePoint groupware
application. Office XP is better at collaborative computing than
earlier versions, says Haskin, but he is quick to point out that
competitor products, particularly the more "mature" Lotus'
SmartSuite, have had these capabilities for quite some time.

A look at an off-the-wall story off the Web

"Next-generation "buddy lists" could transform phone habits"

It's not your father's buddy list. The same kind of technology that
powers instant messaging will be coming to a cell phone near you.
Aptly named Presence technology will be able to tell you who has
their phone on, who's on a call, and who doesn't really want to be
called - maybe he's at a movie, or she's in the middle of a mud mask.
Eventually Presence will be able to tell you where your buddies are,
so maybe you can hook up with so-and-so if you see that you're both
at the same boring conference and want to steal away for a while.
Motorola is working on Presence. Look for it to start popping up in
cell phones later this year.
