The Sun chief thinks Microsoft is more about monopoly than Parker Brothers and that if the appeals courts don't stop it, Microsoft will wield its dominance over the core software of personal computers to become Lords of the Internet. Instead of splitting up the company, McNealy would rather Uncle Sam ban Microsoft from spending its cash on anything except dividends and its own core business. One example is its lack of support for offline access, says editor Tony Redmond. But for the most part, Redmond says, SPS is a solid product with useful document management features and comprehensive search capabilities. A bonus: it's about as easy to deploy and manage as a file server. New features include e-commerce functionality, SharePoint Team Services portal sites editing, IIS 5.0 usage reports, new drawing tools and better integration with Office. The bottom line: high-end Web site designers won't get what they need from FrontPage 2002, but it's a good choice for Windows shops committed to IIS on the server and Office on the desktop. Something to keep in mind while on vacation this summer: Acme Rent-a-Car is being sued by a Connecticut man after it used Global Positioning System technology to track him and then fined him $450 for speeding three times. The New Haven Small Claims Court case pits New Haven president James Turner against Acme, a local company. When Turner contested the charges, Acme was able to point out on a map exactly where he exceeded the company's threshold speed of 79 mph. Acme said it is not trying to make money with the fine, just protect its assets. The judge has delayed the claim until the Department of Consumer Protection issues a ruling.
