Redmond will integrate Clarus' eProcure into Microsoft's supply chain, accounting, distribution, e-commerce and CRM apps that are based on SQL Server. The deal is aimed at the middle market. A copy-protection company in Germany got inside the technology and decided Microsoft's method for parrying piracy isn't big brotherly and allows for reasonable upgrades. Product-activation requires people to activate their PC online or by telephone to continue using the software. But an analyst says beware of software giants bearing kind words. He says Ximian may find itself trying to keep up with Microsoft -- a move that could prove fatal. The virus police say there's a program out there disguised as a security patch from Microsoft. That "patch" is actually loaded with a nasty new version of Leave, the self-propagating Internet worm. The new malicious code is offered for download in a bogus Microsoft security bulletin with a forged Microsoft.com e-mail return address. A hyperlink in the bogus document advises recipients to download and install the patch from a Web site with an address that begins "http://www.microsoft.com@" and is followed by hexadecimal values. Intel's new and improved version of the Pentium III Xeon top-end server chip should be ready to go by mid-August. For now, Intel will swap out the defective chip with the slower 700MHz version. Intel stopped shipping the chip in April because of a bug that could crash servers. A group of security experts found a chink in Check Point Software's Firewall-1 and VPN-1 firewalls that could let intruders push unwanted traffic into or out of corporate networks. CERT says the hole could open up a nasty can of worms, from snooping to denial-of-service attacks. Check Point has a patch -- you may want to check it out.
