"Avanade, EMC jointly target high-end Microsoft projects"

Are you a Microsoft premiere customer? If so, EMC may be getting its
hands on you. A deal wherein Avanade will make EMC its primary
storage vendor for enterprise-class Microsoft solutions will give EMC
access to Microsoft premiere customers, according to a storage
analyst. Avanade is a joint venture between consulting firm Accenture
and Microsoft. With this new deal, Avanade will get busy integrating
EMC's higher-end Symmetrix disk arrays and software into Microsoft
environments.

[1] "Microsoft Great Plains taps Clarus for e-procurement"
Microsoft Great Plains and Clarus are teaming up to deliver an
Internet-based procurement solution for indirect and direct online
purchasing. Redmond will integrate Clarus' eProcure into Microsoft's
supply chain, accounting, distribution, e-commerce and CRM apps that
are based on SQL Server. The deal is aimed at the middle market.

[2] "Windows XP activation technology revealed"
Is the product-activation technology in XP really worthy of all the
"invasion of privacy" controversy? A copy-protection company in
Germany got inside the technology and decided Microsoft's method for
parrying piracy isn't big brotherly and allows for reasonable
upgrades. Product-activation requires people to activate their PC
online or by telephone to continue using the software.

[3] "Microsoft gives blessing to open-source .Net, but analyst smells
a rat"
Microsoft has said in public that Ximian's "Mono" project, an
open-source version of .Net, is flattering and a nod to the .Net
strategy and Redmond's vision of Internet services. But an analyst
says beware of software giants bearing kind words. He says Ximian may
find itself trying to keep up with Microsoft -- a move that could
prove fatal.

[4] "Bogus Microsoft bulletin spreads Internet worm"
"Leave" just won't go away. The virus police say there's a program
out there disguised as a security patch from Microsoft. That "patch"
is actually loaded with a nasty new version of Leave, the
self-propagating Internet worm. The new malicious code is offered for
download in a bogus Microsoft security bulletin with a forged
Microsoft.com e-mail return address. A hyperlink in the bogus
document advises recipients to download and install the patch from a
Web site with an address that begins "http://www.microsoft.com@"; and
is followed by hexadecimal values.

[5] "Intel halts sales of defective server chip"
Apparently there's one chip that's REALLY down, but it will soon be
up again. Intel's new and improved version of the Pentium III Xeon
top-end server chip should be ready to go by mid-August. For now,
Intel will swap out the defective chip with the slower 700MHz
version. Intel stopped shipping the chip in April because of a bug
that could crash servers.

[6] "Hole found in Check Point's FireWall-1 and VPN-1"
There's a hole in the wall. A group of security experts found a chink
in Check Point Software's Firewall-1 and VPN-1 firewalls that could
let intruders push unwanted traffic into or out of corporate
networks. CERT says the hole could open up a nasty can of worms, from
snooping to denial-of-service attacks. Check Point has a patch -- you
may want to check it out.

[2] "RealNetworks skins Apple, Microsoft"
Network Computing evaluates RealNetworks, Microsoft and Apple's
streaming media technologies. Despite a hefty price tag, RealNetworks
gets the editor's choice award with an "A," followed by the free
Microsoft Windows Media with a "B." The good news about Windows
Media compared to RealNetworks is comparable quality and additional
features RealNetworks has yet to implement. Apple's Quicktime is
free also, but got an average "C" grade for overall capabilities.
It's really only a reasonable option for Mac houses.

THE MISSING LINK
--------------------------------------------------------------------
A look at an off-the-wall story off the Web

"So what's the best country in the world for IT?"

Finn is in. In a U.N. ranking of the top 20 countries in the world
for technology, Finland "finnished" first. Apparently, they're
rolling out more killer Finnish products than you can imagine. The
United States finished second, followed by Sweden, Japan and Korea.
The U.K. came in at No. 7.
