LEAD STORY
"Glitch allows free XP preview--again"
A security hole in servers run by Conxion, Microsoft's Web hosting
partner, allowed people to download a testing version of Windows XP
without paying for it for the second time in two weeks. Conxion has
not yet tabulated the number of illegal downloads. The preview
program is viewed as an important first step in getting Windows XP
ready for its Oct. 25 launch. Unauthorized users who downloaded it
still require an authentication key to activate the software. But
software code that circumvents the activation technology is available
on Internet.

[4] "Growing Windows behind strong Microsoft quarter"
Microsoft is expected to post a profit of 43 cents per share, down a
penny from the same quarter last year, considered a strong
performance amid the U.S. economic downturn. Analysts generally
credited strong sales of Windows 2000, Microsoft's flagship computer
operating system, for pumping up fourth quarter sales to $6.5 billion
to $6.6 billion, up to 13% more than a year earlier and $100 million
higher than expected.

[1] "Five ways Microsoft went wrong with Active Directory"
According to a February 2001 report by Giga Information Group,
Windows 2000 licenses exceeded the one million-copy mark, but only
10-15% have deployed AD in any way. Jason Perlow shares five theories
on why he thinks, "the reception to Active Directory has been less
than lukewarm." You probably won't be surprised to hear that lack of
PDC functionality and DNS issues top his list. (May 7, 2001)

A look at an off-the-wall story off the Web

"Floridians mock cop cams"

People are wearing masks and making obscene gestures at cameras, but
it's not on Bourbon Street. The cameras in this case are the property
of the Tampa, Fla., police department. About 100 people protested a
new security system that scans faces in the city's crime-ridden
nightlife district to search for wanted criminals. The video cameras
snap pictures of faces in the crowd and analyze 80 facial points
between the nose, cheekbones and eyes to compare them to a database
of 30,000 criminals and runaway teens. In a related note, sales at
novelty shops of fake glasses and funny noses have skyrocketed.
