[2] "Microsoft seeks rehearing in antitrust ruling"
Microsoft has asked a U.S. appeals court to re-examine its ruling
that the company illegally commingled computer code of its Internet
Explorer browser and the Windows operating system. The filing does
not address a motion filed by government prosecutors last week asking
the appeals court to expedite the case back to the U.S. District
Court ahead of schedule. Some antitrust attorneys said Microsoft's
motion may be a tactic designed to slow it down.

[3] "Microsoft to ease new Windows anti-piracy measures"
Microsoft will ease up on planned anti-piracy measures in its
upcoming Windows XP operating system amid criticism that the company
will needlessly hassle innocent users. The move centers on a new
feature called Windows product activation that asks for a unique code
when first using the product, effectively tying the software to a
single machine. Microsoft said it will alter product activation and
publish some technical data about how activation works.

[4] "Glitches hinder Hotmail upgrade"
Hotmail's face-lift went awry and Microsoft quickly withdrew an
upgrade amid technical problems. The upgrade was to be an improvement
on the free e-mail site's user interface and e-mail filtering and
spam-control tools but after launching the upgrade it was withdrawn
almost immediately. Microsoft declined identifying the problems.

Microsoft's new server management package, Microsoft Operations
Manager 2000, is now available. MOM monitors the performance and
availability of servers and applications. The software runs on
Windows 2000-based servers and will also work with .Net Enterprise
servers. The costs $849 per processor for each server.

THE MISSING LINK

A look at an off-the-wall story off the Web

"The driving nightmare - the car that talks back"

It's hard enough battling the kids for control of the car radio, but
now, thanks to IBM, you have to contend with the car itself. Big Blue
has developed an "Artificial Passenger" to keep travel weary drivers
awake at the wheel. The system changes radio stations to see if the
driver notices, cracks jokes, and includes a conversation planner
program that asks questions and measures response times to determine
if you're dozing in the driver's seat. If the computer receives a
sluggish response, it squirts a chilling shot of ice water in your
face. Suggestions for an optional Three Stooges package that sprays
seltzer instead of water and then calls you a "knucklehead," have
been dismissed.
