LEAD STORY
"Microsoft releases new security tools"

There's more info on the Web about Microsoft's new security tools.
HFNetChk is a command-line tool that points out which security
patches are on a network's machines and checks those patches against
the latest releases. The other tool, the Microsoft Personal Security
Advisory (MPSA), is a Web site users visit to get a report of their
computer's security settings along with recommendations for security
patches, changing weak passwords, or improving security settings.

[1] "Microsoft debuts demo 2 of XML query tool"
Anyone up for an XML query tool? Microsoft has released a second demo
of XQuery, which is Redmond's answer to the latest version of the
World Wide Web Consortium's XML Query Working Draft. XQuery will work
its way into Microsoft's product line, from SQL Server database tools
to .Net frameworks. The demo is at

[2] "Microsoft plans Web server for appliances"
Look for a dedicated Web server to roll out of Redmond early next
year. The Windows .Net Web server will shoot for a piece of the
growing appliance server market and maybe try to steal some of
Linux's thunder there.

[3] "UK resident to file FTC complaint against Microsoft"
A chap in the UK is taking issue with Microsoft's Hailstorm
technology, saying it flouts privacy safeguards for European users.
The guy plans to file an official complaint with the U.S. government.
Just add Hailstorm to the list -- earlier this week a group of
privacy police and consumer watchdogs updated their complaint about
the Passport authentication technology.

"Server clustering with Windows 2000 Advanced Server"
Brien Posey's article about server clustering in Windows 2000 begins
with definitions for scalability and availability -- the objectives
of clustering. He moves on to discuss the two different types of
server clustering available in Win2k -- hardware clustering and
network load balancing, how they work and the benefits of each.

A look at an off-the-wall story off the Web

"Quick: Get Tux some shades"

It seems Tux the Linux penguin is hot in Hollywood. No, the Linux
mascot is not the subject of an animated series (not yet at least).
But major moviemakers such as George Lucas' Industrial Light and
Magic special effects studio are embracing the open source operating
system. Even Pixar Animation Studios, creator of the Toy Story
movies, is considering Linux (though its CEO is Steve "Apple
Computers" Jobs). Sounds funny? A cluster of Linux servers produced
the three dimensional special effects in Titanic. Just this week, IBM
got into the act and released its Linux Digital Studio package, which
features workstations, servers and storage devices.
