[2] "Compaq rethinks Java support in PCs"
Compaq has done an about face when it comes to Java. The company has
decided to go ahead and bundle a Java Virtual Machine (JVM) with
every Windows XP computer that goes out the door. Compaq says it
changed its mind based on customer feedback.

[3] "CERT warns of security hole in HP OpenView"
HP's OpenView and Tivoli's NetView both give attackers too good a
view - the two products have flaws that could let an attacker seize
privileges on and possibly even commandeer servers. If you're running
OpenView Version 6.1 on Solaris 2.x, HP-UX 10.20 and 11.00, or
Windows NT 4/2000, you may want to look into the patch. Same goes if
you're running NetView Versions 5.x and 6.x on Solaris, AIX, Tru64
Unix or Windows NT 4/2000.

[4] "Downgraded Code Red causes few problems"
The FBI says Code Red didn't make much of a mark on the Internet over
the weekend. Security experts say you still need to patch Windows
2000 Professional, Server and Advanced Server and Windows NT Server
if you haven't done so already.

[5] "Hack insurer adds Microsoft surcharge"
Got IIS software? Need to insure it? Get ready to pay. At least one
insurance broker charges up to 15% more to cover IIS, a favorite dish
of the Code Red worm. J.S. Wurzler Underwriting Managers actually
jacked up IIS premiums BEFORE Code Red rocked the Internet. Wurzler
also charges more to cover NT software.

ASK THE EXPERT - CAN THIS IT MARRIAGE BE SAVED?
===================================================================

Dear Ask the Expert,
Presently, my company works in a Novell environment. We would like
to go to Win2k but need to keep the Novell server because it serves
as a gateway. We would like to utilize Active Directory and its other
services. What would be the best plan of attack with the least amount
of disruption to the users?
See searchWin2000 expert Paul Hinsberg's response:

Dear Ask the Expert,
In my company, we have Windows NT with Proxy and Exchange server 5.5
for e-mail and Internet access. How can I block any downloading and
e-mails (receiving or sending) with .exe extension files attached?

A look at an off-the-wall story off the Web

"Workers use e-mail for flirting"

The office romance has gone digital. Workers surveyed in Britain
confessed to various forms of on-the-job e-mail abuses, and flirting
in the virtual office was No. 1 on the offenders' hit parade. Men
were the biggest offenders with 27% admitting they've sent romantic
overtures through an e-mail server as compared to 13% of the women.
Women said their biggest e-mail abuse was planning their social life
or gossiping. Forwarding porn and jokes also ranked high on the list.
