LEAD STORY
"Windows XP to cost more than 2000, Me"

It's party time in Redmond: Windows XP goes to PC manufacturers
today. Along with the pomp and circumstance comes the revelation of
price. The new OS will be a little pricier than other Windows
versions. The Professional Edition will run about $199 as an upgrade
or $299 for the full version.

[1] "Microsoft rolls out another security tool"
Add another tool to the IIS toolbox. Microsoft has polished and put
out IIS Lockdown. Administrators can use Lockdown to lock out Code
Red worms and other security threats. The tool guards Web servers
against most known IIS flaws even without patches installed.

[2] "How to repair and repel Code Red attacks"
BindView director of security strategy, Scott Blake, describes the
problems the Code Red worm has wreaked, and maps out some fixes for
those who've been hit.

[3] "IDC: Fault-tolerant Wintel servers pressure Unix vendors"
IDC analysts say Unix vendors may need to sharpen their sales pitches
thanks to the advent of fault-tolerant Wintel servers. Stratus
Technologies has unleashed its ftServer 5200, a fault-tolerant,
two-processor server that uses Intel Xeon processors and runs Windows
2000 Advanced Server. The better, stronger, faster server could
signal Wintel's advance into Unix territory and force Unix vendors to
justify their place in the server market.

[4] "MCSE starts to lose its shine"
Got your MCSE? Better have some people skills to go with it. The
demand and salaries for MCSEs have gone down this year, so engineers
need an edge. Recruiters say it's important for MCSEs to bundle a
bunch of skills with their certifications, including business skills
and people skills.

[5] "Microsoft supported by dead people "
Call them the "Microsoft Underground" -- two dead people have
apparently written to at least one state attorney general asking him
to go easy on the company in the antitrust suit! Those letters may
have been sent in by family members of the dearly departed, who are
with Microsoft in spirit.

A look at an off-the-wall story off the Web

"Thumbs up for Internet traveler"

Dutch student Ramon Stopplenberg has expanded on the concept of
freeloading through the Internet. Spawned by his Web site,
LetMeStayForADay.com, Stopplenberg has been on a three-month trek
across Europe. Penniless, Stopplenberg sponges a warm bed, a meal and
computer access from generous Europeans responding to his online
solicitations for room and board. He's slept in castles and on
countless couches. He's even managed clothing and limited travel
expenses from several sponsors. And the invitations keep pouring in
from South Africa, Asia and even an invite from Jay Leno to appear on
the Tonight Show. Leaving Europe, however, will require airfare, and
so far there have been no takers interested in footing the bill. File
this one under: Stranded.
