LEAD STORY
"Microsoft shines light on 64-bit Windows "

It's time to Advance. Redmond has rolled out Windows Advanced Server,
Limited Edition. The Win2k-based OS is now available for computers
based on Intel's 64-bit Itanium chip. Look for HP, Compaq, Dell and
Big Blue to roll out servers running the new OS within 30 days.

[4] New technologies simplify asset management

[1] "Oi! Get out of my data center"
A Morgan Stanley study shows Microsoft may have some work to do on
its reputation, if not its products. The study shows many CIOs do not
consider Redmond's stuff to be "enterprise class." For example, an
underwhelming 16% of CIOs thought SQL Server was ready for the "big
time."

[2] "Code Red the Dracula of worms"
Code Red may be leaving a permanent stain on cyberspace. A fresh
variant of Code Red II was discovered last week. "CodeRed.d," as it's
called, exploits the same flaw in IIS as the original Code Red. One
antivirus expert thinks these worms may never stop procreating and
that Code Red, in one form or another, will never go away.

[3] "New Microsoft judge hard to read"
The judge wielding the gavel in this latest phase of the antitrust
trial has a reputation for having a no-nonsense and organized
approach to the law. Judge Colleen Kollar-Kotelly (try saying that
name three times fast) is most experienced at meting out justice to
murderers, although she has heard cases involving intellectual
property and biotechnical issues.

[4] "New technologies simplify asset management"
In this searchWindowsManageability interview, asset management
technology expert Steve Goldstein describes new technologies -- such
as radio frequency -- that will help IT managers better control IT
assets, thus increasing system productivity and total cost of
ownership.

A look at an off-the-wall story off the Web

"German PR blitz seeks to lure tech workers back home"

Call it a case of inverted homesickness -- a nation homesick for its
people. Germany wants its IT workers back, the ones who have moved to
"Amerika." How will Deutschland do it? They'll launch an ad blitz.
This week, a Stuttgart-based economic development firm is paying for
a plane to fly a banner that says "Back to Germany" over Southern
California beaches. Sounds more like an order than an invitation
doesn't it? Later this week, five planes will skywrite that same
message over New York City. Later this year, a print media ad blitz
will begin. Germany has been losing about 120,000 IT workers every
year; about 15,000 move to the United States.
