Another virus is getting around in Microsoft Security Bulletin clothing. The "Invalid worm" randomly encrypts executable files and pretty much trashes them. Dell is the first OEM to publish an OLTP benchmark using Intel's newest 900 MHz Pentium III Xeon in a single eight-processor server running Windows 2000 Datacenter Server. Fujitsu earned the top spot using a 128-processor, 64-bit system running Solaris. Although it could be tomorrow's standard, it's today's puzzle. Even Microsoft's own chief of Windows Jim Allchin isn't sure how HailStorm will work or how it will bring money into Redmond. MS is banking on Hailstorm to move business computing to the Web. The first test release will be this fall. Although Microsoft hasn't exactly put the penguin on its Christmas card list, the company admits it has learned a lot from Linux. The success of the open OS in low-end servers convinced Microsoft to tweak its server product line and include a cheaper, stripped-down model for use on Web servers. MS also has learned to improve relationships with programmers who use Microsoft products. Getting a ride in London may be a good way to check out the latest electronic equipment. A survey showed that in the first half of this year, taxi riders left 2,900 laptops and 1,300 handhelds in the back seats of London cabs. The cabbies, driven by honesty and knowing how to play "fare," returned 93% of the laptops and 85% of the PDAs to their owners. (The rest went unclaimed). Of the 62,000 cell phones left behind, only half of the owners claimed them. Some other "forgotten" items included a cat, a suitcase full of diamonds and a small girl.
