LEAD STORY
"DOJ won't pursue Microsoft breakup"

Uncle Sam will not try to take an axe to Microsoft this time. DOJ
lawyers announced today they will not aim to split up the company in
this newest chapter of the antitrust case. That's one way to speed
the case along -- by narrowing the list of desired remedies.

[1] "Gartner: HP-Compaq merger unlikely to complete"
Not gonna happen! Gartner analysts don't think HP and Compaq will be
able to seal the big deal. There are just too many obstacles,
including the government's blessing, questionable cost savings from
the merger, and a mire of product overlaps. That's just a few of the
hitches. Gartner says neither company has done a good enough job
showing the benefits outweigh the risks.

[2] "Netcraft finds IIS locked down in wake of Code Red"
Netcraft makes monitoring Web servers its business, and the company
has found that more and more sites running IIS are beefing up
security. Netcraft says Code Red awareness and the Microsoft patch
have really improved IIS systems on the Internet. But sites with the
root.exe installed by Code Red II and sadmind/IIS are on the rise.

[3] "Microsoft touts $5 billion in R&D spending"
Bill Gates says his software company is spending $5 billion per year
on research. Gates thinks it's a worthwhile investment and encourages
other companies not to skimp on research. One of the fruits of the
five billion? A "shake clear" screen -- you could shake away this

[4] "Microsoft researchers discuss forthcoming end-user .Net
functionality"
Redmond's researchers are trying to get more from .Net. They're
working on "Sideshow" -- an initiative to improve communications and
notifications. Users would be able to personally craft how, where,
and when to receive their notifications. Sideshow will stay put on
the Windows desktop.

[5] "Review: Win XP will retire 9x"
What does Microsoft Operations Manager have that "generic" management
products, such as HP OpenView, lack? A MOM expert answers that
question and explains how MOM can help IT managers track and manage
system and application performance.

[6] "The Van 2.2 eases Windows upgrades"
Virtual Access Networks' release of The Van 2.2 adds support for
Windows 2000 and Office XP, in addition to a new Admin Tool. The

ASK THE EXPERTS
====================================================================
Dear Ask the Expert,
Could our network be haunted? The security log on various domain
controllers indicate that a Win98 machine periodically attempts to
log on to different NT servers that do not belong in the workgroup.
It does so at times when there are no users at the workstation (I've
checked and the office is locked without anyone in it when it
happens). Do we have a ghost?

THE MISSING LINK

A look at an off-the-wall story off the Web

"Most kids prefer Net to library for homework aid - study"

Libraries are supposed to be quiet -- but the Internet age is making
the silence downright deafening. A recent study found that middle
schoolers are making the Net their 'braries. Of the 12 to15 year-olds
polled, more than 70% of the ones with Internet access depend on the
Web for homework help and for finding material for school projects.
Only 24% hit the shelves for most of their schoolwork information.
Just think, a whole generation of kids is growing up
"shush-deprived."
