LEAD STORY
"Microsoft: Tech industry not sure what comes next"

It was a little announcement with a big impact. The DOJ said this
week it will not take an axe to Microsoft. Now it's time to read what
the announcement didn't say. IT executives and analysts think the
tone of the language indicates the DOJ is going to put XP under the
microscope. There's also speculation galore on what "prompt,
effective and certain relief" means.

[1] "Solution providers say Microsoft deserves punishment"
Several companies didn't like the news from Washington. They think
now that Microsoft doesn't face the threat of a breakup, they will
just keep on monopolizin'! One company official points to XP's bundle
of goodies as proof that Redmond will continue to maul third-party
developers.

[2] "Security experts slam DOJ decision"
The DOJ decision doesn't sit well with the security community.
Experts say Microsoft isn't inspired to make its products as secure
as they can be. Why? Because they have so little competition. If
Uncle Sam says the company is ok as-is, won't they keep on making
buggy and vulnerable products?

[3] "New Outlook Web access vulnerability discovered"
How'd you like some stranger to get his hands on your private
corporate e-mail address? If that sounds good to you, you'll love
this new vulnerability in Exchange 5.5's Outlook Web Access (OWA).
Redmond's security bulletin stresses that an attacker cannot exploit
the flaw to read, write or change a user's e-mail, unlike the last
OWA exploit. A patch has been issued.

[4] "Code Blue worm infects China"
The color may have changed, but the worm is pretty much the same. A
new Internet worm, "Code Blue" has reportedly turned up in China.
Blue is a lot like Red and is squirming its way through computers and
servers in China. No word yet how widespread it is.

[5] "Review: Win XP will retire 9x"
EWEEK ran Windows XP through the drill. The verdict? Start packing
your bags for the retirement home, 9x. Reviewers found XP has enough
abilities (stability, scalability, compatibility and useability) to
send Windows 9x packing. XP and Win2k are so closely related, that
sites running Windows 2000 on their desktop systems don't need to
make the migratory move unless they want those XP-exclusive features
like Remote Assistance and Remote Desktop.

[6] "Bad Packets: DDoS and the Jedi Mind Trick"
SearchNetworking's Wes Simonds explores the ongoing battle between
'Net privacy guru Steve Gibson and Microsoft. At issue: Windows XP
and DDoS attackers that love it.

"Windows 2000 vs. Solaris"

This searchSecurity discussion thread has generated a slew of
responses. Despite years of friendly competition between hardline
Windows users and Unix fans, most of the responses here are very
evenhanded, taking both operating systems' strengths and weaknesses
into account.

THE MISSING LINK
---------------------------------------------------------------
A look at an off-the-wall story off the Web

"Busty blonde email lawyers face lawsuit"

Here's an e-mail that turned out to be a bust. And the bust turned
out to be the e-mail, for that matter. A London lawyer apparently
wanted to "upgrade" his secretary. He e-mailed his boss that he
wanted a "real fit busty blonde" next time. He probably won't get to
find out if busty blondes have more fun, file better briefs, or take
better dictation -- because Murphy's Law kicked in. Yep, the outgoing
secretary stumbled upon the e-mail. "Busted!" Both lawyers claim the
e-mail was a silly joke and they've apologized, but to no avail. The
case will go before a Tribunal early next year.
