MICROSOFT AND SUN HEAT UP THE WEB SERVICES RACE | IDG NEWS

The stage is being set for the Microsoft/Sun showdown over Web
services. Microsoft announces this week at the Professional
Developer's Conference that the Visual Studio.Net toolkit is now a
release candidate and will be sent to manufacturing by the end of the
year. The company will also dole out code for the Visual Studio.Net
Release Candidate; ASP.Net; the .Net Framework; and the .Net Compact
Framework. Meanwhile, Sun's iPlanet is working to integrate an
instant collaboration platform into its Portal Server product.

MICROSOFT WAVES PASSPORT TO CORPORATE CLIENTS | IDG NEWS

Proof that Redmond is pitching Passport to the enterprise lies with
software developer Alibre, Inc. The ASP's Computer-Aided Design
architectural rendering application uses Passport as its nucleus.
Alibre is a Microsoft software development partner, so Passport was
not a hard sell.

THE MISSING LINK | Flirting with technology

If you like to meet chicks or dudes from the secure comfort of your
computer, but you kinda miss the smells of smoke and stale beer mixed
with cologne and perfume, get thee to New York's East Village. A new
bar there, Remote Lounge, marries old-fashioned flirting with
new-fashioned flirting. The place is wired to the hilt with
closed-circuit TVs, surveillance cameras, joysticks and instant
messaging -- so you can scope out (spy on) people and send them
little messages instead of reciting the dreaded "Do you come here
often" or "I've lost my phone number, may I have yours" pickup lines
that drove you out of the bars and onto the Internet in the first
place. An NYU student put it best: "It's a legalized version of
stalking." Check the place out: http://www.remotelounge.com.
