LEAD STORY

MICROSOFT READIES WINDOWS .NET SERVER | News: IDG News

Beta 3 of Windows .NET Server should be available this month,
according to Bill Gates. Why haven't there been the same kinds of
hype and hoopla with the new server OS as there were with the XP
desktop OS? Analysts say it's because fewer customers will see the
need to upgrade because many of them are still working their way
towards Windows 2000.

Users have legitimate expectations of privacy and personal control
when it comes to putting their files on our servers rather than
tucking them away on their local drives. In a new feature starting

effective ways to use NTFS permissions, the Encrypting File system
and third-party tools to manage and control access to user data. Join

THE MISSING LINK | Pope says geeks shall inherit the earth

The geeks shall inherit the earth? Despite the fact that Pope John
Paul doesn't surf, not even to download his favorite Gregorian chants
from MP3, he is giving some props to the digital age. The pontiff
plans to dedicate his message for World Communications Day to the
Internet. That day is a ways away, not until May 12, 2002. This isn't
the first nod the Net has gotten from the Vatican -- the Web was
blessed earlier this year with a pair of patron saints.
