LEAD STORY

MS CERTIFIED PARTNER BENEFITS 2002 | News: CRN

Microsoft's Certified Partners: If you're asking "what's in it for
me" for 2002, the answers are free internal-use licenses for SQL
Server, SharePoint Portal Server, Windows XP, Project 2002, Visio
2002 Professional and MapPoint 2002; 50% off any additional client
licenses beyond the 10 free licenses offered; and two free,
internal-use server licenses instead of one. And three French hens.

MICROSOFT TOSSES A DIME FOR WEB SERVICES | News: InfoWorld

There was no huge announcement, but earlier this month Microsoft paid
the Internet Engineering Task Force a DIME. Direct Internet Message
Encapsulation is a message format protocol to make certain
interactions in Web services simpler -- such as the transmission of
video, graphics, and audio files.

"SHADOW COPY" FALLS ON .NET SERVER HORIZON | News: InfoWorld

Two words to remember when it comes to Windows .NET Server -- shadow
copy. Microsoft officials are tooting the horn of this feature,
saying it offers a point in time view of files on a server. So if you
were a little too hasty to delete something, a shadow version of your
file could save you, like the snapshot features in storage
technology.

THE MISSING LINK | Keeping a who's-naughty list

They know when you've been stealing. They know when you've skipped
school. They know when you have sassy mouth, so be good, don't break
the rule. OK, that's a lame attempt to "Santa Claus is Coming to
Town"ify this story, but police in London are getting downright North
Polar on kids over there. Any youngster who demonstrates criminal
potential will go on the law's "naughty list" -- a delinquency
database that will track kids' behavior. Police and community workers
will keep an eye on the naughty and use the info to study why good
kids go bad and recommend therapy or substance abuse treatment
programs.
